Cannot run online diagnostic in MacBook Pro (mid 2012)

Why in some models cannot run this online diagnostic anymore? e.g. MacBook Pro (mid2012) Is there an Apple article talking about this situation?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.15

The problem is a compatibility issue between the system firmware on your laptop and the diagnostic bootloader on the Apple remote server. If your laptop has the latest macOS Catalina firmware installed, then there is nothing you can do to fix things. If you have Catalina installed, then make sure it has all its update patches installed which should mean the system firmware is at its latest. I'm assuming you getting the error "Cannot load EFI/Drivers/TestSupport.efi" since that is unfortunately a common error on these older Macs.

If you are getting any other sort of error, then it most likely is some sort of network or Internet issue.

FYI, I know this is a compatibility issue as it caused other Apple bootloaders problems which required those bootloaders to be updated by Apple. These issues started when Apple introduced the new system firmware to allow Internet Recovery Mode and the online Apple Diagnostics. I don't know why some Macs have this issue and others do not unless some models don't get later firmware updates since I know some people have complained that their Macs don't always get the latest firmware. I have personally seen this happen with our organization's 2012 Macs....some can access the online diagnostics while others cannot. I never had enough time to investigate which firmware revisions worked & which had issues.

Edit: Just to clarify, the compatibility issues is only in reference to seeing the "Cannot load EFI/Drivers/TestSupport.efi" error.

Hi monitosjr,

You started from a great resource: Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac

The article still states:

"Learn more

On an Intel-based Mac, if you can't start Apple Diagnostics with the D key, try these solutions:

  • Press and hold Option-D at startup to use Apple Diagnostics over the internet.
  • Make sure that your Mac isn't using a firmware password."

As no limitations based on hardware are mentioned, when running the local diagnostic are you seeing any issues with your Wi-Fi hardware or are you having issues with you internet connection?

If needed, the article here can help you check your connection: If your Mac isn't connecting to the internet over Wi-Fi

Also, what happens when trying to run the Apple Diagnostic online after booting to safe mode? How to use safe mode on your Mac

Keep us posted and someone will continue to assist.

Best.
