IPad Air 5 + external monitor = not working anymore

Hi,

I noticed that since at least ipadOS 16.3 and continuing into 16.4.1 my iPad Air 5 doesn‘t work with my external monitor anymore. When connect I the two, the iPad starts to charge and that’s all. The screen doesn’t turn on, nothing. Conversely, I cannot use the keyboard and mouse that are connected to this monitor. This used to work. I can replicate the issue on with my wife’s iPad Air 5 running the same version of ipadOS.

The external monitor is a Dell S2722QC and the connection is USB-C. The same monitor works well with my M1-powered MacBook Pro that is permanently in clamshell mode.

Enabling Stage Manager makes no difference.

Any tips on where to look for a solution?

Thanks

Hey Sparks0829,

Thank you for replying.

Yes, the particular display worked with this iPad Air previously.

What I tried so far:

  • use Apple's short USB-C-to-USB-C cable instead of Dell's one: didn't work
  • use Apple's long USB-C-to-USB-C cable instead of Dell's one: didn't work work
  • use Apple's USB-C to HDMI/USB adapter connected to HDMI: worked

Power cycling the monitor didn't work but resetting it to factory settings did.

I can now use my iPad for 99% of work instead of my MacBook Pro. Very cool.

Take care.

Hi there zidarko2,

Did this display work with your iPad Air previously? Try these steps to see if they resolve the issue for you:

If the display doesn’t turn on when you connect it to iPad, unplug it from iPad, then plug it back in. If that doesn’t work, unplug the display from its power source, then plug it in again.

You'll find this information here: Connect iPad to a display with a cable

Take care.
