iPhone 11 - certain apps frozen and delayed responses

Hello,

I have had this iPhone 11 for around 4 years. It was someone else’s for 2 years before it was mine. Recently, my phone has been having some software issues. When I open certain apps (instagram, gmail, messages, calls) the screen will be frozen on the last thing I saw in that app last time I used it, or it will not load at all. I cannot press anything within the app, I can only swipe out of it. The only time these apps will work is after I have restarted my phone, but only then for a few minutes. I have tried deleting these apps and re-downloading them but the issue prevails.

The second issue I have been having is regarding delayed responses to actions. When I hold the side button and the top volume button, the phone will not show the ‘swipe to turn off’ screen immediately, even if I try to hold it for longer or repress the buttons. Sometimes it will take 10 seconds to appear, and sometimes up to 10 minutes. Because of this, I can also not make calls, or receive them. When I press the call button, nothing will happen, only 10 minutes later will a ‘calling’ screen briefly show up then disappear. The same goes for receiving calls, as nothing will show up, apart from a brief ‘incoming call’ screen ten minutes later. I also am not receiving notifications until I go into the app.

Around a year ago, I dropped my phone and cracked the screen, and black spots appeared in the upper right corner. They did not hinder any of the phones functions, so I did not get them fixed. Yesterday, I got the screen fixed, in case they were the issue my phone was bugging out. However, the issue remains.

Does anyone know how I can fix this or if this has happened to you?

Thank you,

Emily

You may be mistaken because the iPhone 11 was released in September 2019 (about 3 and a half years ago). It is not 6 years old as you may be thinking.

——-

1) Double check to ensure that you have ample free storage space available on your iPhone 11. Open Settings ➡️ General ➡️ About ➡️ Available: Here you will see the available storage space on your iPhone. You should maintain at least 10GB or more free storage space for the iPhone’s efficient operation.

OR

2) You may have a poor battery condition which cannot provide sufficient power for peak performance. What is the Battery Health of your iPhone? Open Settings ➡️ Battery ➡️ Battery Health and let us know which percentage you see for Maximum Capacity. Also note what is written under Peak Performance. If your battery's Maximum Capacity shows a value of 80% or less, then it has gone through its lifecycle and therefore should be replaced, according to Apple.

Hi Emily,

The good news is that I managed to fix the issue on my phone (It has not reoccured for a few hours now, and I am 90% sure it will not but I am aware that this is still a bit short). It did however unfortunate, require me to fully factory reset my phone. From your previous posts it seems you have not tried this yet so I will list the steps I took to fix the issue so maybe you could try the same.

  1. (optional) I made a full backup of my phone via my macbook (if you have a windows laptop the process might be a bit more complicated but I think you can back up your phone with itunes).
  2. After I backed up all data I connected my phone again and hit the recover iphone button in finder on my macbook (again for windows this is different). This will fully recet your iphone and will take about 20-ish minutes. You can also do this from settings on your phone: general>transfer or reset IPhone>Reset
  3. If you did choose to backup your phone you can reinstate this backup once the phone started up again, and I did choose to use the backup I made.

I'm sure there are way better explanations out there about making a backup and recovering your phone but in summary that did fix my issue for now. I hope you manage to sort this out and if the issue returns for me I will update this post.

Good luck fixing your phone,

Ed

Hello Emily!

First solution: Force restart your iPhone.

400; Performance issues resulting in atypical display bug particularly random freezes can be remedied by a force restart given that minor firmware crashes are the underlying causes. A force restart is a simulated battery removal procedure that is used to forcibly shut down and restart a frozen iPhone. Similar to a soft reset, this reboot process does not affect the internal data saved on your storage so it’s a safe method to begin with. Just follow these steps:

  1. Quick-press then release the Volume Up key.
  2. Quick-press then release the Volume Down key.
  3. Press and hold the Side button for about 10 seconds then release when you see the Apple logo.

Allow your iPhone to finish its boot sequence then use it as you normally do to find out if the symptoms are gone. If it continues to lag and freeze after a force restart, try other options to eliminate other factors.

Second solution: Update or delete bad apps.

Installing updates can also help fix such problems if they’re attributed to malwares and system bugs. Similar to iOS Updates, app updates also embed some fix patches to address in-app issues. Installing these updates can also fix performance issues on your iPhone that are attributed to rogue apps. If your device is still able to respond and can connect to the internet, try to check and install pending app updates with these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, tap on the App Store icon to open the application.
  2. Tap on Today tab at the bottom.
  3. Then tap on the user profile icon (Apple ID header) on the top right corner of the screen. You should see the account details showing up on the display.
  4. Scroll down to the Available Updates section.
  5. Tap on Update next to the name of the app to install individual app updates.
  6. If multiple app updates are available, tap on Update All to update all apps at once.

In the case where lagging and freezing instigated after installing a new app, that app must be the trigger. That said, try to delete or uninstall the suspicious app and see how your phone behaves afterward. Just continue with these steps to remove any suspicious apps from your iPhone 11:

  1. Start by heading on to your Home screen.
  2. Scroll to and find the app that you’d like to delete or uninstall from your iPhone.
  3. Tap and hold on the app icon for a few seconds. Keep holding the app icon when the pop-up menu appears and then release when the app icon starts to jiggle.
  4. Tap Delete from the warning message.
  5. Follow the same steps to delete other apps that you’d like to uninstall.
  6. Finally, tap Done on the top-right corner of the screen once you’re done deleting apps.

Reboot or soft reset your iPhone after making all these changes and then see if the problem is gone. If your phone continues to lag or freeze, try visiting a Genius Bar.

Hi,

i cannot help unfortunately but I have this issue precisely as you described it. After a reboot all is well but 5-10 minutes later a app starts to hang, usually opening messages is the worst but it could be any app.

I’ll try to figure out a fix :) and seeing that you have the exact same thing I am leaning towards a software issue. My phone started acting this way right after I used it with carplay probably a coincidence but just to be sure; did you use carplay before this started happening?

Anyway I’ll see if I can figure something out.

regards,

Ed

Hi, I got my phone repaired at a phone repair place, not Apple. In hindsight, I think I should have gone to Apple, as I don’t think the phone repair people fully understood my issue, and thought it was because of the broken screen. I should have communicated that it was an internal issue, not an external one. Do you know if I took it to Apple if they would be able to help me?
