If you've purchased your Apple Watch new (and not second-hand), you should still have AppleCare coverage. This is essentially warranty for newly purchased products. Schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar for evaluation and options. That's definitely a hardware issue.

No, it's most definitely NOT common. But electronics can fail, even from the very best companies. Once evaluated by Apple, they'll give you your options.
