When you join a shared library you and share photos from your personal library, they will be moved from your personal library to the shared library.

if you want to keep your own photos in your own, personal library, you have to duplicate each photo you share and then share the copy of the photo. Otherwise you can see your own photos only when you use a view showing the shared library.

How did you set up the shared library? If none of your own photos are now in your personal library, you may have used the option to share all photos automatically. This is a bit risky - it is much safer to select the photos manually that we are sharing. Otherwise we might include photos in a very poor quality, that should have been deleted long ago, or even photos, that should never been shared, because they might be embarrassing for us or our friends. Or we might share duplicates or very similar photos, which might be annoying for the sharing partners, because it will waste space on their devices. if you shared all your photos at once, or even have set the iPhone camera to share directly from the camera, sight unseen, consider to change this and move all photos back into your personal library. Then make a plan what you want to share and share lonly photos and videos worth sharing that might interest others. And if you want to keep all your photos in your personal library, share only copies of your photos. This way it will not matter, if someone is changing the titles of your shared photos or changing the adjustments.

Hi stef278,

We can help you locate your personal photos after joining an iCloud Shared Photo Library. Just follow the steps below, and that should get you to them.

Switch between your Personal Library and Shared Library on your Mac

1. Open the Photos app.
2. At the top, choose Personal Library, Shared Library, or Both Libraries.
3. You can toggle between Both Libraries, Personal Library, and Shared Library.  In Both or Shared Library view, photos that are in the Shared Library are badged with an icon. To turn this off, choose View > Metadata > Show In Library.
