Airpods say connected but aren’t

My airpods have suddenly stopped working. They say they are connected, but when I play music it comes from my phone and bounces back when I click on the ‘airpods’ option. I have tried disconnecting them and retrying, I have forgotten the device and set them up again and still not working. Anyone else had this issue?

If you need some help:

You may need to update the device the AirPods are connected to, to ensure you have the latest iOS or MacOS version.

Then:

Firmware updates are delivered automatically while your AirPods are charging and in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac that's connected to Wi-Fi.
