Firmware password?

I was working on my Mac (13 inch 2017) taking notes from my class when my screen was about to go dark I moved my finger on the mouse pad so my laptop wouldn’t sleep and the screen turned dark then went to firmware password. My laptop was almost out of battery but enough for half an hour worth of screen time.

I got the laptop as a gift already updated and on so I never set a firmware password. I tried command R but it doesn’t work.

what do I do????

From Set a firmware password on your Mac - Apple Support,

If you forgot your firmware password

If you can't remember your firmware password, schedule an in-person service appointment with an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. Bring your Mac to the appointment, and bring your original receipt or invoice as proof of purchase.

Whether you set that firmware password and forgot it, or someone else set it before giving you that Mac and forgot it, does not know what it is, or simply forgot to tell you about it is irrelevant to those required actions.
