putting computers in Locations?

In my Finder sidebar, I have a set of volumes and machines listed in "Locations". That's handy. But not all the machines in my network are shown there. Why not? How do I take a machine from my network and add to

Locations?

Well, I have file sharing turned on on one machine, and it's there under Network, but it is not listed in Locations. I can connect to it, and share just fine. Now, it is an old one, running El Capitan.

I've never noticed things in Locations dropping in and out.

But again, what does "Locations" in the Finder sidebar in Monterey MEAN? FWIW, I only see "Locations" in the Finder sidebar in Monterey. Don't see it in High Sierra or El Capitan.

Again, I have machines that I am NOT obviously connected to listed in the locations list. I gather that means that they are not mounted as a share? That being the case, what are they doing in the Locations list? That is, these are machines that, when I select them in Locations, it says "Connecting ..." suggesting that they had not been connected. For that matter, when I command Finder prefs to Show connected servers on the desktop, they are not shown. So I have unconnected machines sitting in Locations in the Finder sidebar.

I haven't heard anyone even come close to making sense out of this.
