If you are unable to receive email, start with the steps here: If you can't receive email on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Also, be sure to Restart your iPad, since restarting can often help resolve unexpected behaviors. Additionally, test another Wi-Fi network to rule out connection issue.
