iOS 16.4.1 now eliminates my iPhone wallpaper and replaces it with all-black on all screens

Restarting power resets this to selected settings and then it goes back to black shortly thereafter. How do we fix this obvious Bug?

I spent some time experimenting. There is an interaction between Do Not Disturb and wallpaper. Specifically, you can have a different wallpaper when DND is on. But it works both ways. If you change the wallpaper to the one that is assigned to DND it will turn DND on, and if you turn on DND it will switch to that wallpaper. So what you need to do is have a different wallpaper for DND than for when DND is off. Further, if you don’t have a wallpaper assigned to DND it will revert to a black screen.

What’s interesting is that, thinking back, it has always worked this way in iOS 16; I puzzled over it months ago. I don’t know why it has suddenly become obvious.

This is what I did to "resolve" the question of which Focus will blacken lock screen on my iphone 12 on 16.4.1(a)

  1. In settings, Wallpaper I added one new lock screen with a photo from my library.
  2. I deleted all other lock screens by tap and hold the lock screen itself and swiping up all of them.
  3. I tried each of 4 Focus types DND, Sleep, Fitness, Mindfulness and it seems the DND and Sleep both blacken the screen, Fitness and mindfulness do not.

DND

SLEEP

FITNESS

MINDFULNESS

Any other combination or assignments I leave others to test.

I'm having the same issue and resetting the wallpaper does not resolve it permanently. Eventually the wallpaper goes black again. If I go into settings I can see my wallpaper is still there and set correctly, however only a reboot restores it. This began immediately after the installation of 16.4.1(a) and occurs apx 1-2 times daily

My wallpaper always stays the way I put it. But a new feature is to have different wallpapers for different Focus settings, so you have to set up any focus settings to the wallpaper you want for that focus. Any that don’t have a wallpaper will be black.

Lawrence, at least in my case, appears to be right. The new DND settings all have their own wallpapers, at least after 16.4.1 (a). I have my DND set up across my devices, and it appears DND is “sticking”. In other words, I turned DND on with my MBP, and then off with my phone, it came back on again and changed my wallpaper again all by itself (stuck somewhere in the cloud?) I’ll check to see if my MBP is still in DND when I get home.

TLDR: Sleep does this, Do Not Disturb doesn’t.

I haven’t the faintest idea what else it could be. My wallpapers work fine, always have, even after the new update. I think people are too quick to blame iOS updates.

The only way my wallpapers have ever turned (almost, in some cases,) black, is when the Sleep Focus turns on. My Do Not Disturb Focus also turns on once a day, (same as does my Sleep Focus, but at a different time, obviously,) and my wallpapers remain “light.”
