is it possible to open jpg files in Photos on a macbook?

I haven't found any documentation on this but do see it mentioned different places in a hand-waving kind of way. I want to open a jpg in Photos because I understand I can use the Photos app to increase contrast in a jpg image.

My steps:

On a macbook running macOS v 12.5.1, click Photos in Launchpad.

Expected behavior:

Some way to open a file.

Actual behavior:

I'm asked to open a library.

(Not what I want. (Don't know about or care about libraries.) )

Photos stores photos in a "Library". If you want to use Photos, you'll need to let it create a library. It should be an option when you open it for the first time. You should then be able to to to File>Import ... and import your file.

Photos is a Photo library manager. You can import the photo into the Photos menu, and the imported library will show you the photos you recently imported. There you can duplicate the photo selected, and then edit it.

Sometimes when you import a photo, it actually duplicates the file into a library folder that is hidden from you called the Pictures folder, if your advanced proferences for Photos has it manage your photo library.

When it does so, any edits will impact just the photos already imported into the library.

Alternatively you can use the Preview application with its editing tools to adjust brightness of individual JPEGs and save them.

I just found the way - using the Preview app - to increase contrast:

With a jpg open in Preview, click Adjust Color.

In the adjust color dialog, find the Contrast slider tool (2nd one on the list in my version of the app).

Move the slider left and right to adjust contrast.

No need to mess with the Photos app and libraries.

I couldn't find this in MacBook docs, stumbled across it more or less.
