Opening .heic messages
The .heic photos sent to me in iMessage will not open?

Thanks so much for using Apple Support Communities.
HEIF or High Efficiency Image File Format is an industry standard format for photos that Apple began utilizing in iOS 11 and subsequent updates. If you aren't able to see those photos in that format, then you may need to update your iPhone to the latest available version of iOS by following the steps here: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support. Once you update your iPhone, check Messages again and hopefully those photos are displaying as expected.
If your device is not compatible with iOS 11 or later then you would need to view those photos on a different device that supports that particular file format. You can learn more about all of this right here: Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices - Apple Support
