AppleTV network unavailable

When trying to open AppleTV on the Samsung smartTV, it says "Network Unavailable. There were errors with this connection. Wait a moment, then try again."

This has been going on for a few days. All my other apps work (Disney, Netflix, Hulu, Spectrum/calble, etc.) TV has been "reset" and internet connection is good. AppleTV subscription also up to date/paid for.

Something is causing the app to be unable to contact the remote servers.

See if this document has clues that apply to your situation: If you can't watch or stream movies and TV shows in the Apple TV app - Apple Support

“Network Unavailable” may mean no valid reaction from the remote server.

  1. Verify that your router doesn’t block Apple’s servers (or its CDN) through a firewall setting, if you customized that.
  2. Verify that your router doesn’t block ports that Apple services like to use, if you customized that.
  3. Verify that you use a good DNS on your router, like the one from your ISP, which gets updated with all server names that Apple might use, if you customized that.
  4. Verify that your TV has the correct date and time and timezone, as Apple may be more strict about that (TLS) than other content providers.

Else

  1. Check for Tizen OS software updates.
  2. Check for Apple TV app updates, if not set to do so automatically.
  3. Try resetting the Apple TV app.
  4. Try deleting and re-installing the Apple TV app, if available through your device.
  5. Try a cold restart of the TV (not standby-wake, but really off for a moment).

Thank you, this was what finally worked for me after trying to find a fix for a month or 2. I had to set a custom dns on my router because there's no way to change it on my roku ultra.

I used cloudflare's public dns, 1.1.1.1 primary and 1.0.0.1 secondary for ipv4. I also found a spot to enter ipv6 dns addresses and used 2606:4700:4700::1111 for primary and 2606:4700:4700::1001 for secondary. Hopefully that helps someone spend less time searching for a solution.

In working with Linksys they had us disable Express Forwarding on our router which resolved the issue with Apple TV+ for us. Linksys site says enabling this feature can increase router performance so I wasn’t sure overall if it was a good idea. This is a new router that was also giving us issues accessing some Microsoft cloud products and disabling the Express Forwarding cleared that up too. One has to access their router settings to disable this default setting.

Same issues here.

Is this also for the Apple TV app on a Samsung smart TV?

This is what Samsung Support suggests:

What to do if an app is not working on your Samsung TV - Samsung Support

  1. Cold reboot the TV,
  2. Update the TV system software, if available,
  3. Delete and reinstall the misbehaving app (if deletion is supported for this app),
  4. Reset the ‘Smart Hub’ (I think like a factory reset for the apps part of the TV).

If you need further assistance after that, please continue with Apple Support.

Not sure if it's because I'm on a free trial.

It is not. Trial subscribers have access to all of the same content as paying subscribers.

I can watch the first episode of Silo.

Even non-subscribers can access select first episodes, as a sort of teaser.

Verify that you are signed in successfully to the Apple TV app, through the in-app Settings ⚙️, using the Apple ID account that has the Apple TV+ subscription linked to it.

Just solved this issue (at least, one possible way to solve it). Somehow the time on my tv had been changed/reset and automatic updates of the system clock were disabled. Syncing the TV system time again solved the issue.

AppleTV devs - please update your error messages to actually explain what is causing the error or give an error code like every other half-decent company out there. I found the issue quickly enough when I went to the LG App store and it immediately told me why it couldn't connect to their app store servers. AppleTV is such a half-baked app...

For other folks, some quick troubleshooting to differentiate between different causes. If you have multiple devices connected to the same network and appletv doesnt work on any of them then it's likely an issue with your internet connection (DNS settings have been suggested). If it works on other devices but not on your TV then it's your TV's settings that are wrong.

i have checked the DNS settings. I have even changed them. The problem still exists.

I have had the same configuration of my network for years. I put all the apple TV's and hubs and IOT devices on a network that only has access to apples IP space and the ability to resolve via my internal DNS server.

Over time this is what i have noticed.

With each upgrade apple tries to force the hubs and TVs to be on the same VLAN and SSID as the cell phones. I have always used MDNS and mac address blocking on the cell phone network to force the TVs and hubs to be on their own restricted network. For years i have had no issue with this configuration but with each iteration of upgrades there are more and more issues that pop up.

This latest issue of the apple tv network being unavailable is a new problem. Since no other apps and no other devices have any issues i have to rule out all internal settings and confirm that this is an apple issue.

The solution for me so far is to just reboot the apple tv. Once rebooted everything works again. If it was my internal network it would not work even after a reboot.

I don't expect any support from apple. they have never responded to anything. any and all tickets i have opened in the past never make it to any resolution.

I hate to say it but i think youre all on your own to figure out what the issue is.

For all the people that have a flat network. Meaning one VLAN and one SSID. The default settings of all SOHO WiFi routers are to allow everything out. DNS is external to your network so unless you have modified the internet router the problem is with apple. if this is your setup. i would suggest factory reset your WiFi router and reboot the Apple TV and see if that fixes it.
