Apple Maps not working in tunnels

I use iOS 16.4 and Apple maps in tunnels is not working. Loses track and tries erratically to find another route outside the tunnel. Experience this in Switzerland, Austria, Germany. Very annoying, problem exists since at least 2 years. Why can’t Apple fix it? It works with Google Maps or Here app very well.

Any other experiences?

Experiencing the same thing in Sydney tunnels, specifically when driving in the M8. (Sydney,Australia). Based on these answers, I might try other maps going forward!

Many thanks for your answer. I fully understand how GPS works and relies on the satellite signals.

However, the correct positioning and navigation still works well on other apps like the “Here WeGo” app.

I imagine the system could be more ‘intelligent’ and predict the route based on the current street I am driving on, incl. using current speed and known traffic, even if the GPS signal is lost during the tunnel drive-through.

Apple Maps simply freezes in some tunnels and this is unexpected, dangerous behaviour. The driver doesn’t know which exit to take.

Even without data or GPS - without knowing the car’s speed or position - Maps should have plotted the route to at least display the next exit. What’s more, it knows it’s entering a tunnel and data may be lost. The right behaviour would be to download step by step directions before the tunnel and display them when data is lost.

This is a major shortcoming with Maps, its last serious feature problem.

If you open the Apps from inside the tunnel midway then neither Apple Maps nor Google Maps will start. It also depends on the configuration and openness of tunnels.

Maps need the internet through Cellular to start the navigation. Once started it does not require the internet it will work on GPS. (All Maps)

Maps rely on GPS (Global Positioning System) technology to determine your location and provide you with directions. GPS works by receiving signals from a network of satellites orbiting the Earth. However, these signals can be obstructed or weakened by physical barriers, such as buildings, trees, and tunnels.

When you're inside a tunnel, your GPS receiver may not be able to receive signals from the satellites because the tunnel roof obstructs the signals. As a result, your GPS device may not be able to accurately determine your location and provide you with directions.

Additionally, tunnels can also interfere with cellular network signals that Maps may rely on to determine your location. This can further contribute to inaccuracies in mapping data when you're inside a tunnel.

To overcome this issue, some tunnels may have their own dedicated GPS systems, which work by transmitting signals to GPS receivers inside vehicles. However, this technology is not yet widespread, so it's still common to experience issues with Maps when traveling through tunnels.
