Finder does not show files on current folder, but it does on "This Mac"

I'm piggybacking on a question (linked below) I saw posed in late 2021 that never received a workable response.

I recently purchased a new M2 Macbook Air. Using the Migration Assistant, I transferred over all of my data, files, etc. from the old computer to the new one.

When using the finder my search shows files, folders, etc. on "This Mac". If I use the "Current Folder" option however, no search files show up. This appears to be a somewhat common issue with users who have used Apple's Migration Assistant. I'm not sure if this is some sort of permissions issue. Screenshots attached.

Here is what I did (M2 MacBook Pro):

  • Restart into One True Recovery (Shutdown, hit power button, then press and hold Power until Options)
  • Open Disk Utility
    • Select Data volume and Mount. It will ask for a Password if it is encrypted (FileVault).
  • Exit Disk Utility.
  • From the Utilities menu, Select Terminal
  • Run these commands:
cd /Volumes/Data
rm -R .Spotlight-V100
  • Restart normally
  • Open Terminal and run this command:
sudo mdutil -E /

sudo will ask for an admin password. Enter your password and hit return. It won't echo anything on the screen when you type the password.

Once it finishes indexing, it should display found items in their folders.

Why should we ned to do all this for something that should work, This is a core function of the finder, it is in its name, "Find"! Apple needs to fix this probem. See in attched image, i seach for the file name with "Grass" in it and you see there are no search results, but there are 8 files in the folder with "grass" in their name!

Apple get it together!!

Barney-15E,

I replied a little too quickly earlier today. The solution worked, but only temporarily. When I returned to my computer later in the day (the macbook pro, Apple M1 Pro chip, had gone to sleep, but was not shut down) I attempted a search, but no luck. Same crappy results as before I ran your solution. Does that give you a hint as what else might be causing the problem? Anything you can share would be terrific. Thank you so much!

This worked like a charm for me. Thank you!

By the way, I had just gotten off the phone with AppleCare support and the guy couldn't care less about my problem and said if I absolutely insist on using finder, maybe I can just use the "search this mac" portion. Also, he suggested that absolutely the only solution was to reinstall my operating system. He was quite confident. Honestly, not helpful at all.

Anyhow, thank you! Problem fixed in 3 minutes flat.
