After the iOS 16 update on my 2017 iPad, I keep getting "Accessory not supported" and my smart keyboard quit working. I've tried the rebooting thing and it will work until the iPad goes to sleep, then it quits working again.

Why am I now getting "Accessory Not Supported" and Smart Keyboard stopped working after iOS 16 update? 9" ipad from 2017, and this is 2nd keyboard in 5 years that has done this to me. How can I get it fixed? The rebooting only gets it to work until iPad goes to sleep, then have to start all over again.

If you are using a Smart (folio) keyboard, the alert is typical of a faulty folio keyboard. The electrical connections that pass though the flexible fabric hinges typically fracture - this usually resulting in errors and/or the on-screen notification that you see. 


The Smart folio keyboard itself is not repairable. The only remedy is replacement of the keyboard. If you are within your Keyboard’s one-year limited warranty, you will need to contact Apple Support or your retailer.

Alternatively, you can initiate a support case using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your device, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

A further alternative is to visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store, where the technicians will be delighted to assist. When visiting the Genius Bar, a reservation is recommended:

I find it very suspicious that my keyboard was working just fine until I did the big iOS 16 update. The morning after I did the update, the error started appearing and the keyboard only works after a reboot of the iPad. This is my second "smart" keyboard in the last 4-5 years. This one is maybe 2 years old. I've checked the connections, they are clean and intact. I recently had a very unsatisfactory experience with Apple Support, so my faith in them is a bit skewed.
