iphone 14 pro max catastrophic failure

I have just purchased an iphone 14 pro max and am having repeated catastrophic failure when copying pictures from the phone to my Windows 10 PC. After rebooting the phone and the PC time after time, it will copy maybe 2 pictures, stall and give me the message catastrophic failure. It also sometimes says 'the requested value cannot be determined'. Does anyone have any idea what this error is and how to get around it? I bought this phone for the additional camera/picture assets but see already that I have made a mistake!

Thanks!

The photos starting with E have always existed, they are the edited versions of the original photos. While on the phone, you don't see the different versions, only when you connect the phone to the PC. So if you don't copy the E versions, you copy the unedited photos.

I have had the problem with copying photos from the iPhone to the PC (catastrophic failure) for a long time. It became worse with every new iPhone, and now with the 14 it is a nightmare. It surely is an Apple bug which is obviously not recognised by Apple.

P.S. The E versions do not cause the catastrophic failures. I also get the failures when I only copy unedited IMG photos (without the E before the number.

The only way to get around it is to continue copying from the number which obviously caused the catastrophic failure. You see which one it is because you don't see the photo but only the icon, and it's the last copied photo (which, of course, is not copied because it causes the catastrophic failure). But the system keeps crashing, you have to restart the process multiple times until you run out of patience.

Probably copying the photos from iCloud is the safest bet - but much slower compared to copying them directly from the phone... if it works! LOL Which it doesn't! LOL (LOL - but not really funny but a catastrophic software failure by Apple)

Hey bruno75,

Thanks for your reply - much appreciated. I have used the cloud before but don't want to use it any more for storage.

In answer to your statements:

  1. I have used iphones for approx. 20 years (most recently iphone X) and have never had a problem with downloading my photos to PC. This issue has only just started to appear with my iphone 14 PM. What I did notice when this happened is that there are the regular images on the phone (e.g. 123.jpg), plus a new set of replica images on this phone (e.g.E123.jpg). I don't know what these are but image something to do with the extra camera lenses. When this issue happened, I can confirm that only a few of each group of images would copy to my PC.
  2. I cannot count how many times I restarted both my PC and iphone to copy over a few more photos each time before having a 'catastrophic failure' every time.
  3. I can confirm that I have the latest updates from MS and Apple for the phone.

Thanks again!

Hey isleofdreams,

Thanks for those details. If not wanting to use iCloud to automatically manage this process, we want to make sure you’re using the proper steps to manually import your photos to your Windows PC. For help, check out these steps:

Import to your Windows PC
You can import photos to your PC by connecting your device to your computer and using the Windows Photos app:
1. Update to the latest version of iTunes on your PC. Importing photos to your PC requires iTunes 12.5.1 or later.
2. Connect your iPhone or iPad to your PC with a USB cable.
3. If asked, unlock your iOS or iPadOS device using your passcode.
4. If you see a prompt on your iOS or iPadOS device asking you to Trust This Computer, tap Trust or Allow to continue.

Then, visit Microsoft's website to learn how to import photos to the Windows Photos app in Windows 10.

If you have iCloud Photos turned on, you need to download the original, full resolution versions of your photos to your iPhone or iPad before you import to your PC.

When you import videos from your iOS or iPadOS device to your PC, some might be rotated incorrectly in the Windows Photos app. You can add these videos to iTunes to play them in the correct orientation.

If you want to ensure photos from your iOS or iPadOS device have the best compatibility with Windows 10, try these steps:
1. On your iOS or iPadOS device, open the Settings app.
2. Tap Camera, then tap Formats.
3. Tap Most Compatible. From now on, your camera will create photos and videos in JPEG and H.264 formats.

This is outlined further here: Transfer photos and videos from your iPhone or iPad to your Mac or PC - Apple Support

We hope this helps out.

Take care!

Correction:

Regarding the photo size, I have done more testing. If you just download from iCloud, you get the .HEIC format - which gives about the original size. If you want to use the pic for other purposes, .HEIC is usually not accepted, so you have to transform each pic into .jpeg - a huge job. If you choose "other download options", you can choose the most compatible format - which is .jpeg - but this compresses the pic to a much smaller size.

Hey there isleofdreams,

The first thing we wanted to make you aware of is that you can use also iCloud to sync photos from your iPhone with your Windows PC without ever needing to physically connect them together. If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, here are the steps to set up iCloud Photos on both devices: Set up and use iCloud Photos

Moving forward with troubleshooting, we'd like to help by learning more about what's happening, along with ruling out some possible causes:

  1. You mentioned that you recently purchased it, but was there a time when your iPhone synced photos to your Windows PC without any issues? If yes, let us know when this first began to occur.
  2. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart: Restart your iPhone We also recommend trying one of your Windows PC.
  3. We also recommend making sure you have the latest Microsoft updates installed for Windows, but the latest for your iPhone model is iOS 16.4.1(a). You can verify this within Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update your iPhone or iPad.

Cheers!

Hey Steven,

I simply made sure I had the latest version of sw on my phone and copy/pasted the jpg files except the ones beginning with 'E'. That seemed to do it and showed me that it was something to do with those 'E' files. I haven't looked up what they are/how they are different from the others but it appeared to be them which caused the catastrophic failures.

Since then - no probs! :-)

Hope that helps!

Cheers

David.

Probably copying the photos from iCloud is the safest bet - but much slower compared to copying them directly from the phone... But then you get them in .HEIC format and one tenth of the original size, as I have just seen! This is not an option!!!

I would say this is a catastrophic Apple failure.
