No sound on airpods or phone

When I put my airpods in there is no sound. When I take them out again the sound on my phone is off. Rebooting phone does not help. What is happening & how can I fix this?

My AirPods show connected and work with phone but not music or podcasts. I have rebooted the phone, removed and added the AirPods. Still no joy. This just happened, they used to connect and the sound worked fine. Just started out of the blue.
