Custom Email Domain: Horribly broken implementation. This is why.

Hi Folks,

This is a cautionary tale for anyone thinking of moving their domain to Apple's custom domain service. The implementation is horribly broken and not what one would expect from Apple.

First off: do not reply to this thread unless you are an actual user of custom email domain. If you don't use it, you won't know that what I'm talking about. I started another thread, and got some lame responses.

I understood from the beginning that this is an "all or nothing" proposition. I.E. you must move all your accounts to the service, you can't pick and choose. That's ok. I know a little about DNS and MX records. I have 5 accounts. One of which is in use by my wife. There is a limit of 3 accounts per user. Why? Don't know. Strike one. So I "gave" one account to my wife's Apple ID. We kind of shared that one anyway.

But then there's this: In Mail on Mac, iOS and iPados , IT LUMPS ALL ACCOUNTS INTO ONE MAILBOX CALLED "iCloud". There is no separation of accounts.

Why is this a problem?

  1. You can't see to which account your email has come in without some digging
  2. You can't set up just one account from the other Apple ID's you shared the custom domain with. So in this case I want to add the second address I gave to my wife to my email, but here the other address comes along for the ride. Now I have to watch that I don't mark any of her emails as read.
  3. You can't assign different signatures to each account. I have some accounts for one business, and some for others. I can't automatically assign the proper signatures.
  4. I know there is a workaround to "separate" the inboxes using Smart Mailboxes on Mac. But they aren't available on iOS or iPad os, and are a pain to set up.

I decided to try this solution, as I was using shared hosting, and getting a lot of bounce backs. And I don't like/trust Google or Microsoft for my email. But this is so bad, I'm thinking about other solutions. This is not a Pro solution.

This is so bad, I can't believe Apple rolled it out like this. Maybe there's something I missed, but I've been using this for a few weeks now, and the emails are working, so it's not like it doesn't work at all. So if you know of something I've missed, please share it.

Thanks.

Workaround:

Ok, I figured out a workaround. But first, I will reiterate that I am using Mac Mail, not the iCloud webmail.

You will need another distinct email address for each custom domain address you want in iCloud. This is because you will need to set up a new Apple ID for each address. Then family share to each of the new apple id's. Make sure to then confirm you want to use the shared iCloud+ plan (This caused me a bunch of time till I figured I hadn't "accepted it").

Then you can associate each custom domain address to each new Apple ID. Then add all the new Apple ID accounts to each device.

It took a boatload of time to figure this out and get it working. But I am happy now, the emails are going through and I can assign a separate signature to each address. I can also pick and choose which addresses I want on which device.

As I said, Apple horribly messed this up.

you have to use the catch all feature correctly

then use the rules correctly too as well and then forward it correctly

because they can get kind of confusing even the smallest minute mistake from the smartest guy will screw up an inbox

so for example when you make a rule and you don't make the folder then the rule doesn't apply because then it doesn't separate into a folder that you didn't make so you have to first make the folder and then you make the rule and then the thing with rules is that it goes in it's descending order numerically.

so if I were you I would try to search for an email client like an app or software or something that suits your needs

that's personalized instead of using a web-based browser email client

so for example I just got off the phone with Zoho the other day

Zoho is an app you don't have to open up a web page and then log into your email and all that jazz it's just an app.

and so for a dollar a month you get to use their software full featured for one email address and from what I can remember it sounds like you just need the dollar a month you know full featured software you don't need like an Enterprise sort of thing going on so if I were you I would look into that and then forward whatever you need to into separate email addresses and then make rules for those email addresses if you need to do anything more extensive than one email address.

hold on.

Stop right here because this is where I stopped reading :

But then there's this: In Mail on Mac, iOS and iPados , IT LUMPS ALL ACCOUNTS INTO ONE MAILBOX CALLED "iCloud".

... relevant because I'm transitioning from the web browser apple service, to use an app for efficiency and, features such as on-going push notifications.

I scrolled through down the list of topics because,

This Community is non existent and

I was kind of amused by it's existence.

solution:

To fix the clump,
From this point on,
Create Folders.
Then rules.

For example.
I own 3 domain names,
Right now I'm job hunting
... So the most monitored email address is
Jobs@SellSome.Online,

Explanation

So first I go into icloud settings.
SECOND, catch all for that specific domain email address.
Third, first create a folder.
Forth, now you can create your rule, now that your folder exists.
So usually all mail is sent, to your physical home address,
123 Shady Shore = email@email.com
There's an option for rule creating.
Even though all mail is delivered to the same one household,
((Your primary email),
if it's labeled for your sister (the email address you want every piece of mail to be sent to given to her)
It will be given to her, because that's now her folder

It's not,

I just explained the main conflict to your problem there sir,

But keep in mind, this solution to troubleshoot what's going on, is Intended for fixes using the web browser version of icloud, which I don't see why you wouldn't.

But it sounds like you're trying to use a third party program software, on an apple device though, why?

if you want,

hang tight and, fix your problem by going to

Icloud.com to "catch all" all your email there,

And create your rules, that way for right now you'll be okay,

... And wait until my thread is answered or until I test out some alternatives that work for me, and I'll let you know what works.

Probably late tonight, I have some stuff to do today but, I'll comeback I hope n, see how ur doing and, if you don't want to use the web browser, then I'll hopefully reply with at least one or two alternatives that are compatible with icloud services.
