i phone was stolen should I erase it

i phone was stolen and I've been told to erase it immediately and others have said wait; what is best

If it’s indeed stolen - you’re not getting it back - and there’s truly no difference either way from a technical perspective as your data is already very securely protected by your passcode.


Erasing it doesn’t make it any more secure, although doing so might provide some psychological benefits. (cutting your losses)


What DOES matter:


Be on-guard for messages claiming to be from Apple or other “authorities” stating that your phone has been found.


These are NOT from Apple - or any other legitimate entity. They are targeted phishing attempts trying to “crack” your phone’s security and/or takeover your AppleID.


You might receive these for MONTHS.


DON’T reply, DON’T follow any links provided, and ABSOLUTELY NEVER reveal ANY personal info or Apple credentials.


Lastly, DON’T perform Step 7 on the following checklist … EVER.


(Doing so will allow the criminals to re-set and re-use your phone)
