When I convert from Numbers to Excel, bullets disappear

Hi!

I'm using Numbers 12.2.1 on MacOS Monterey 12.6.5.

My Numbers spreadsheet has bulleted lists, created using Option+Return for line breaks and Option+8 to begin the bulleted list, as in this example:

But when I export it to Excel to send to my freelance client, it becomes this:

Obviously that's not good.

Is there an option I'm missing?

Thank you,

CK

The only way I have found to have text bullets export to Excel is to do them similar to how Excel does. In Excel, you actually type the bullets as characters (that is the way I know to do it). So far, though, I don't know how to do a tab that will work the same in Excel. You can use a space or two after the dot instead.

Shift Option 9 makes a "dot" bullet

You can hopefully get your into the "Excel-compatible" state by doing the following:

  1. Download and install SGIII's Find and Replace in Selection shortcut (to be used in steps 4-6)
  2. Select the range of cells that have bullets (must be a range, not random cells)
  3. Turn off the bullets you made previously
  4. With the cells still selected, start the shortcut
  5. In the Find box type Option Return
  6. In the Replace box type Option Return then Shift Option 9 then Space Space
  7. If you had any line feeds that were not supposed to get bullets, you will have to edit them by hand to delete the bullet and spaces.

I recommend you do this on a copy of your document, not the original.

Converting/Exporting a Numbers document to MS Excel format is, as you've noted, not perfect.

Numbers does the conversions in both directions. Sata is usually transferred correctly, but Error free translations depend on the features used exist in both platforms, and operate in the same manner on both.

If you have a frequent need to do these translations/conversions, you might find it more efficient to purchase and install MS Excel for Mac, and construct the originals using Excel.

Barry

I would have thought option 8 would be fine but it looks like when you use it in Numbers it converts it into the same bulleted list as you had before. You can use it, but each time when you hit Option Return to create a new line you'll have to hit Command Z to undo the conversion to a bulleted list. Or you can make your list without bullets then put the bullets in last. That's actually not so bad. You can do them all quickly with copy paste paste paste....
