Setting up wired Airport Express for airplay only (I know, I know)

Yes, I am writing this in the year 2023. Airplay remains the most convenient method to get music from one end of the house to the other. A year ago, I upgraded to fiber giganet with a mesh system (1 main router, 1 satellite) and the old Airport Express A1264 took to it just fine. But it completely died (lights out) the other day, and replacements (supposedly unused) are only about $30. So I got a replacement, but it's simply refusing to get set up.

I recall I had the old one set up to create a network, but I gave it the same name as my house wifi and same password. I don't know why, but this worked for over 10 years. I have a feeling the mesh will not allow that now, so I am trying to set up the replacement AX to join the network:

I give it a name and the password, then go to the next step, but it always fails to connect:

Stingo being my wifi network. I remember (vaguely) that when I set up the old ones, it would say that it failed but I would come back hours later to find the AX on my network and ready to Airplay. Maybe that will happen here? But it's been a couple hours already and nothing.

I'm running a 2021 Macbook Pro M1 Max with OS 12.6.3 Monterey. Is Ventura any better at connecting with 2010 Airport Expresses???

I do have an AirPort Express here to test and can help with the setup of your AirPort Express.

Although it might seem unintuitive, the correct initial setup of your AirPort Express will be to "Create a new network". This is the only option that you have that accommodates an Ethernet connection from your main router to the AirPort Express.

Bridge Mode is automatically configured when you go through the setup. If you don't want to use the Wi-Fi network that the Express is creating, you will have the option later to turn off the Wi-Fi network, so the Express will operate only as a wired Ethernet network device.

Yes, all this seems confusing. But, things will work......assuming the AirPort Express is functioning correctly.....if you want to proceed.

In the meantime, you might want to continue working with Tesserax though to see things through.

Sorry, I'm gonna need you to spell out specific directions. Yes, the AX is discovered by the utility. It starts out asking me to set it up by creating a new network. None of the other options in the current Airport Utility prompt seem to indicate bridge mode. Which of the options should I select? Again, I apologize, because I'm sure you've described this process a thousand times, as I see your name in many of the internet responses I've come across, but none I've found yet seem to apply exactly to my situation. Whenever I search for "Bridge Mode" the responses seem to suggest I need to ADD the AX to an existing network.

OK, here's where things are different for me. I have Airport Utility version 6.3.9. It looks like this when I open it (with me pulling down the Other Wifi Devices tab:)

There is no Edit tab, no Network tab, etc. when I select the Airport that it sees through wifi, it assumes I want to create a new network. When I hit the Other Options button, I get the screen in my original post.

Hi,

To all those in the above thread, thanks a ton!! I've been fiddling with my Airport Ex for a while, trying to isolate a spotty internet connection from my "need" for great quality, wireless music. As the APX has aged (long time enjoyer) I know the wifi it emits is less state of the art than originally was. however the AirPlay feature of it remains one of the best solutions around imho.

Thx again all!
