30" Older Apple monitors and MacBook Pro M1 Max

Hi Macworld,

I can not connect my M1 Max MacBook Pro to my older external Apple 30" monitors. Spoke to Apple and they said I may need to find an adapter that can handle a higher resolution.

Any advice would be appreciated on HDMI adapters that may work. I really don't really want to shed out on a new pair of screens. Is it even possible, apple seem to think so.

Apologies for the upside down pic :)

Cheers

Spencer

What you show points to a hardware issue with the display, not a problem with the adapter. Nothing to do with the connection or even the resolution.

If the display was unable to show the resolution, it would simply show a black screen. Not that problematic image.

But to be clear, yes, your old 30" cinema displays would be unable to display the full resolution of the MacBook Pro.

The adapter is not really important in this case. If you really wanted to, you can reduce the resolution from the Mac's System Settings to something the Display can handle. 30" Cinema Displays top off at 2560x1600.
