Facetime camera too soft in room light on MBP 2021 16” M1Pro with MacOS Ventura

I am finding hard to believe that the 2021 MBP has a camera inferior to iPad Air3 or iPhone 11. Why can’t we get rid of whatever softening software is used to smooth out any noise? I just look like a cartoon version of myself, ashamed my clients will think I am trying to hide my age. This is wrong. I am expecting an official response or a fix.

Try a ring light aimed at your face from behind the MBP. It makes a remarkable difference and it's not just Mac's that have this issue most Windows PCs do as well. The camera lens is small and doesn't let much light in.

Also, if you have an iPhone you can use that as your camera on Ventura.

Zoom / Teams / WebEx all have options to soften or "touch-up" the image on the camera which can be turned off. More light will help a great deal. Regular room lighting is not normally enough. Facing a window with direct sun can help. The lens is simply too small to get enough light to the sensor inside the camera. The rear facing iPhone works better because of the larger lens. The iPhone Continuity Camera feature was designed to overcome these limitations for those who desire a better webcam image.

Would suggest the good advise from @James Brickley on dealing with this issue

As for the " I am expecting an official response or a fix. " This is the incorrect place to lodge a complaint

These are User to User Forums and apple will probable never read that request.

To be more effective and communicate Directly with Apple >>

Then have a few suggestions ;

1 - Get Support Choose a product and we’ll find you the best solution.

Start now and open an Apple Support Ticket as they are Apple Employees to deal will these types of issues  and/ or expectations.

2 - Product Feedback - Apple and make it known to Apple regarding this ongoing issue

Hi James, thank you for your answer. All that you mentioned is helpful. However, carrying a ring light or using the iphone are not that practical solutions for someone that works doing factory inspections.

I was hoping there can be a software update from Apple that will reduce the image grain reduction so that the picture is not too soft. At least, we should have the option of having, or not having grain reduction on the webcam.

Best regards

Thank you for your reply. I have dealt with step one, was told my complaint has been entered in the system and that other users have also reported the same, it is a known issue. I wasn’t hoping to get an official response from Apple here but maybe that someone has found a solution.

As for step two, I don’t know how to give feedback about the product. Is there a link I could follow?

best regards
