What can I do with an AirTag on my pets? When I left town my wife/dogs got alarms from the AirTags? Can only one account still use/link to AirTags?

The AirTags were really not designed to track pets. There is no way to deactivate the alarm since your iPhone will not be near them when you travel. This would still be true if you were home and they got away ... the AirTags would still chime which would alert both the dogs and anyone nearby.
A number of other third-parties do offer a much better solution for keeping track of your pets.

"An AirTag can be associated with one Apple ID. If you want to use an AirTag that someone else has used, they need to remove the AirTag from their Apple ID first. If the previous user removed the AirTag from their Apple ID but they were out of Bluetooth range of the AirTag, then you need to reset it before you can use it with your devices."
Thank you for replying but not really helpful for my situation. The alerts occurred in the middle of the night freaking out my dog and annoying my wife. I would like to find a solution that would help us or others we designate track an escaped dog even if we are out of town or at least not have it alarm when the tag is out of range of me for a few days scaring the dog.
