What can I do to get my iMac to recognize my magic keyboard? It was working, then some time ago my computer stopped recognizing it. I followed the steps that were recommended and I can only use my keyboard when plugged in with lighting cable.

Keyboards are like batteries in a sense. They're inexpensive peripherals and they don't last forever. Some longer than others.
Have you tried it on a different Mac?
If it works as a USB KB (when attached with the cable that's what it becomes) then use it like that. If it has failed, Apple doesn't repair KBs; you buy another. At least as a wired unit it works. Since that's happening, my guess is the battery or charging circuitry has failed.

Apple Magic Keyboards and mice are not multi-homed. That is, they can only bluetooth pair with one device. Could it be that your Keyboard has quietly paired with another nearby Mac (or even Apple TV) and therefore, will not pair with the iMac until it's bluetooth pairing is forgotten on the other Mac/device?
The Apple Magic Keyboard can still connect to your iMac via its charging cable which effectively makes it a wired keyboard.
I have done all those steps above, but my keyboard doesn't show up on the list of bluetooth devices
