How to Fix Command + not Switching Windows in macOS Ventura

The setting to "Move focus to next window" is checked in the MacOS keyboard shortcuts settings. Modifier keys are all set to defaults. See attached screenshot of both settings screens.

But when I try to use Command+` to switch between windows within an application, it does nothing. Instead, Control+Tab does it. That makes no sense, because I can't find anywhere that references that key combination. I originally thought it was a problem specific to Affinity designer, and have an ongoing thread on their forum. However, it is applying to all applications, including Safari, so it seems to be a global MacOS problem.

I am running MacOS 13.3.1 (a) on a 2021 14" MacBook Pro with Apple M1 chip.

Any suggestions welcome, thank you!

I had the same issue and this is the solution that worked for me:

  1. Enable displays have separate spaces.
  2. Log out and log back in.
  3. Disable Stage Manager.
  4. Disable displays have separate spaces.
  5. Log out and log back in.

Command tilde (`) should now work when trying to switch between windows of the same app given that the keyboard shortcut is enabled.

What I found is that switching between windows works fine with the default setting, but it stops working when there is a reminder window on the screen. If I snooze or dismiss that, then I can go back to Cmd+`. If I don't, nothing happens. Seems like a bug in the windowing registration for Office, as if the reminder pop up is considered a different application from the main Office application. It's not exactly that, because if I leave the reminder window open and click on a main window and try to backtick through them, it doesn't work; I have to dismiss the reminder window. Really annoying.

I was having this same problem. When I was on Space 2 and I use COMMAND+TAB to switch apps, if the app was on Space 1, then I would NOT switch to Space 1, but I would be switched to the app (the app name was up in the top left next to the apple).

The solution I found is : in System Settings => Desktop & Dock, near the bottom, under Mission Control, there is a toggle for "When switching to an application, switch to a Space with open windows for the application."

I turned this on and it solved the issue.

With Affinity Designer 2.1 installed on Ventura 13.4, I have two open windows and the ⌘+` switches between those application windows. If those two Windows are tabs in one panel, that keystroke switches between the tabs.

This is an M2 Mac mini Pro with extended Apple Magic Keyboard.

Affinity Designer 2.x macOS Keyboard shortcuts.

I have changed no keyboard mapping or shortcuts on this Mac.

Installed the Affinity apps in one of my Ventura installs. Maybe I'm just getting old but I can't see a way to open more than one file in separate windows with the Affinity apps. They always open in tabs and I have to drag a tab out to have separate windows. When doing so, the command to switch windows doesn't change the window focus.

The apps do not seem to follow the same behavior as other apps.

That's exactly what I'm experiencing. Strange, in a previous version of MacOS, Command+` switched tabs within apps for me. I've consulted with other users of a specific app (Affinity Designer) and those users have agreed that the behavior I'm experiencing isn't normal. But those users say it's not normal even in the latest version of MacOS Ventura 13.3.1 (a). So I'm not sure what to believe.

Did you notice that it changed at some point, either with a new MacOS version or when you bought a new computer?
