Mail Follow Up Dangerous

I thought I knew how this "feature" works but got a shock this morning. I had been chatting with a client using Mail and had suggested a course of action, but there was no urgency. My last email turned up in my inbox as Follow Up, but as I wasn't chasing for a quick reply I just deleted it. What I hadn't realised and there was no warning, was that deleting a Follow Up email in your inbox deletes the original email you sent! This is so dangerous and surely is a complete mis-implementation of what could be a useful feature. This must be the only situation where deleting something from your Inbox deletes something from your Sent. Most dangerous and not expected.

To turn this feature on or off, choose Mail > Settings>General, then select or deselect the checkbox next to “Enable message follow up suggestions.

Yeah, deleting the inbox copy as well as the sent copy is flatly wrong. If you send yourself an email or bcc yourself on a email with this feature on, deleting the inbox copy will also delete the sent copy. This is not how bcc or sending yourself an email works with the feature turned off. With it turned off, deleting the inbox copy will leave the sent email intact. With it on, it's as if a follow up suggestion is being giving immediately which is incredible confusing for folks who use bcc.

It seems there is no distinction between a follow up suggestion and ordinary inbox email messages as near as I can tell which is very odd. I didn't even realize the feature was on so have no problem turning it off.

Thank you for describing the problem from a different vantage point.

I don't see any "Follow Up" anywhere in Mail.

Get reminded to follow up on emails with no response

If you send a message and don’t receive a response in 3 days, the sent email automatically resurfaces to the top of your inbox to help you remember to follow up.

Seems pretty obvious that the original message will pop up at the top of your inbox, not send you a additional reminder email message.

I am already aware of how to turn it off, but that is not the point. Deleting an email in your Inbox should never delete an email from your Sent, especially without any warning. Fortunately I spotted this fairly quickly and could recover the email from the Bin. I'm pointing this out so that others may not suffer this loss. Deleting the email should ONLY delete the Follow Up message. This is a very bad implementation of a useful feature that I do not want to turn off.

I too have lost some very important (to me) emails because of this mis-implementation. This problem has been in previous mac versions and is now old enough to be considered an apple problem that must be fixed ASAP. This is surely dangerous. Sometimes I think that apple does not listen enough to these posts. So apple, if you're listening this problem works correctly on Microsoft!!

I am very aware of your point...
