Why is it doing this and how do I fix it? Mouse is bluetooth optical, have used it for years. The battery charge doesn't seem to matter. The mouse preferences have the double click set to the slowest setting, scrolling set to second from lowest, and tracking to second from lowest.

Although it may be an optical mouse, lint or other debris can obscure the optical port and cause these types of issues. Have you throughly examined this port on your mouse to see that this is not the case?

If none of those help, do you have another mouse that you can try with your Mac.
Have you tried using this mouse with another device? If so, do you get the same results or does it work as expected with this device? The former, of course, would point to the mouse, and the latter possibly something amiss with your Mac.
I've cleaned it, compressed air cleaned, and done my best to make sure it isn't the mouse. As one of the symptoms is the Mac treating a single click as a double or triple click, I think it's a software, not hardware, issue. Thanks!
Oddly, yes. My mom recently forgot her mouse and had to borrow mine until she could buy a spare for herself. Seemed to work fine for her.
