Swapped AirPods

Hello! I am questioning whether or not someone took my AirPods out of my case and replaced them with theirs. My phone showed, "Not Your AirPods" when I tried to connect my AirPods. I tried to locate my AirPods on "Find My iPhone" which were found to be at my work a few days prior. When I went to my place of work, a student nearby automatically connected to the AirPods in my case under a different name. The serial number however was the same as my previous AirPods when I reconnected to my phone. Does this mean they were mine all along? Or could they have been swapped out for his but are now connected to this case? I am very confused. Thank you!

Hi there VPAR-0101,

Since the serial number of your AirPods is associated with the charging case of the AirPods, this is most likely why it was showing the same serial number after the AirPods were swapped back. If you are still getting this message about the AirPods, resetting them should resolve what's happening. These steps from How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro show how to do this:

1. Put your AirPods in their charging case, and close the lid.
2. Wait 30 seconds.
3. Open the lid of your charging case, and put your AirPods in your ears.
4. Go to Settings > Bluetooth. Or go to Settings > [your AirPods].
* If your AirPods appear there as connected, tap the More Info button  next to your AirPods, tap Forget This Device, then tap again to confirm.
* If your AirPods don't appear there, continue to the next step.
5. Put your AirPods in their charging case, and keep the lid open.
6. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds, until the status light on the front of the case flashes amber, then white.*

7. Reconnect your AirPods: With your AirPods in their charging case and the lid open, place your AirPods close to your iPhone or iPad. Follow the steps on your device's screen.

Take care!
