Limiting synced Message based on volume or time

How do I limit the number (or time frame) of messages synced in MacMail? I've 20 years of messages and I don't want them all on my laptop, just a limited amount like the last 2 weeks.

I usually access my mail from a browser but want to use the Mac Mail client for it's ability to apply rules and filter messages away from the general inbox (I've Google Workspace which doesn't allow for that without a Mail Client as a middleman.

You can control the amount of mail stored on your Mac. Here's how to adjust the sync settings for your account:

  1. Open Mail and go to Mail > Preferences from the menu bar.
  2. In the Preferences window, click on the 'Accounts' tab.
  3. Select the email account you want to modify.
  4. Under the 'Account Information' tab, look for the 'Download Attachments' dropdown menu.
  5. Change this to 'Recent' or 'None' depending on how much mail you want to store.

Just keep in mind that this will only affect attachments. If you want to limit the number of messages synced, that'll depend on the type of email account. For an IMAP account like Gmail, you can set up a filter in Gmail to archive older emails so they don't sync to your Mail app.

Hope this helps!
