Text keeps jumping in pages.

Hi,

I'm working on my thesis for school, using the pages program on my Macbook Pro. Every time I try to add a new page, between two other pages, the whole document seems to jump around. All my headings get thrown out of balance etc.

I have tried looking into the page break / section breaks options, looked for different tutorials. Nothing seems to work. It is getting really frustrating. So my question goes as follows:

Is there a simple way for me to detach all the pages and current text from each other? So that i'm able to freely navigate the whole document, rearrange text around, add or delete new pages at my own disposal?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

what you have been doing up to now likely falls in the category of word processing.

Once you need headers/footers for a multi-page document, you need to transition to the more book-oriented features of page layout. This may take some digging in the help or manual pages.

The 'trick' if there is one, is that when writing long documents, first break it into chapters, and edit each separately. Then get the software to manage page-headers and footers automatically. You specify what is included in the header/footer ONCE, and let the computer put it in at the top/bottom of each fresh output-page. If you have manually inserted headers, remove them and transition to automatic headers.

Now when you add a paragraph, the text below flows onto the next page, and the header is automatically placed fat the top of the output-page or you. When you add a new page, everything shifts down, but since headers are not embedded in the text, headers do not flow, they get auto-generated for each output page.
