Hey jaleigh225,

The information below may with the issue you're experiencing when opening photos in the Messages app.

Restarting is the best place the start. It refreshes the iPhone's software and has resolved some software related issues. To restart your iPhone follow the steps below. For further reference, can also view them here: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

1. Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo.

If restarting doesn't resolve the issue, test the iPhone with your cellular network and also test with Wi-Fi networks. If the issue is network related, you will be able to determine if it's the cellular network or a Wi-Fi network. Once you have that information, you can reach out to your cellular provider or your internet service provider.

If issue happens with both networks, make sure there is enough storage on the iPhone. Low storage may cause issues such as not being able to open photos. To check storage and also review information about minimizing storage, click here: How to check the storage on your iPhone and iPad.

Also, make sure the iPhone is up-to-date by following the steps here: Update your iPhone or iPad. Keeping your iPhone up-to-date ensures fixes are up-to-date.
