Unable to see voicemail on iPhone 13 (Verizon)

Purchased iPhone 13 (now at iOS 16.5) while on AT&T, then switched six months later to Verizon. Things have been working up until early May, 2023 when we stopped seeing voicemail come in. The calls appear under “Recents” and we can get our messages through *86 to Verizon, its just that the iPhone is not able to pull them into the Phone app. We also discovered that we are not able to record a custom greeting in the Phone app. It is set to the default greeting with “Retrieving greeting…” and a continuous pinwheel showing, and Play and Record are grayed out.

When attempting to do a reset, we also discovered that we have two eSIMs, one from AT&T and one from Verizon, but both with the same phone number. In Settings>Cellular, there are two listings under SIMs, both with the same number, but only one is ON. I do not have a physical SIM in the phone. There is no way of telling in the Settings>Cellular page what carrier is aligned with either eSIM.

Would this be a reason why voicemail is not working? If so, why was it working two weeks ago, but not now?

It appears that your current cellular service provider is Verizon. If this is the case, then you can open Settings ➡️ Cellular and ensure that the Verizon eSIM is set to ON and then you can simply delete the inactive AT&T eSIM by tapping on it and then choosing Delete eSIM (all the way in the bottom of the page).

If the above action does not activate the visual voicemail feature then contact Verizon and explain to them that visual voicemail is not active on your iPhone and that you would like them to set it up again so that you can access it. Voicemail is a feature provided and maintained by the cellular service provider and Verizon should be able to resolve it.

After several calls with at least four Verizon tech support agents, the fourth person actually had a solution for our specific problem. He stated that he would need to delete the “5G core trigger” which specifically works with the voicemail feature. He also stated this was not only an issue with various iPhone models, but with Samsung devices as well. Once he did his work on our two iPhone 13’s, all is working correctly. What is more surprising is that the lower level Tier 1 folks at Verizon have no direct info on this fix, which is why I requested that this last tech agent provide this information to the Tier 1 tech support so others with this same problem can find resolution in a timely manner.

Sweet! Thanks for spreading the word.

Inform Apple About this!

I definitely think this is something Apple should be made aware of. You can spread the word to them by giving them feedback…

Report this to Apple:

Do your part: Let Apple know what is going on here. Provide them with feedback on this. They may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they received on this, the more they will know what is going on, and what needs to be fixed in updates to come.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: on the fix. Include the URL of this thread.
  4. Proceed from there aw necessa

Yes. Things are conflicting between the two cards.

At Verizon (and most other carriers) Tier 1 are only minimally trained to follow standard help scripts. They are supposed to escalate any problem that isn’t covered by their scripts, but they are hesitant to do so because they lose “points” if they escalate too often.

The support problem is aggravated by the fact that it is a really frustrating job, and the average “life” expectancy before they quit is about 6 months. Further, to save money Verizon and others outsource their Tier 1 support to places like Philippines.
