Digitizer

I replaced the digitizer on my iPad gen 8 with much success however when I test the digitizer by turning it off a text box appears where the slide to power off appears with the button half in the text box and half outside the box. Any attempt to slide fails. What might be my problem?

Thank you for your reply. The iPad warranty has expired even though the iPad still worked the glass was shattered badly. I just needed the glass (digitizer) replaced. Rather than having the repair done by Apple or other 3rd party technicians I used this one to learn how to make the replacement. That process went well just that according to y_p_w the digitizer was a bad part. Now the iPad is just trash so I will recycle it.

If what I purchased is a poor quality digitizer what type of digitizer do you suggest? I can easily switch it out because I have not closed the iPad yet.

I'll just say that discussions with specific instructions or suggestion for parts to perform DIY repair of iPads generally doesn't get very far around here. This is an Apple forum and the only way Apple would handle an issue like this is to replace/exchange the entire iPad with a service replacement unit. I'll just leave it there other than to say that I've seen glass/digitizer repaired iPads done a few times and the quality of the parts and work can vary. I saw one shop's work where there was a red spot under the glass that looked like a spot of ink.

When Apple gets an iPad as a service exchange, they will try to salvage whatever they can to as parts to make service replacements, but I'd think for an iPad that's probably only the logic board and maybe a few other parts. Every service replacement iPad I've seen had a pristine case, suggesting that the case was new - possibly with a new serial number. If a digitizer isn't working or the glass is cracked, Apple will only install a complete front screen assembly, which will almost always be new. I've never heard of Apple trying to salvage the display by attaching a new piece of glass/digitizer to a display.

That said, the iPad generation 8 will be recycled. Apple can replace the digitizer but only a few dollars short of a new iPad comparable to the generation 8. I will opt for a new one. Thank you for your replies.

When Apple "repairs" any iPad model, it's either at a battery service or an "other damage" price, and they don't repair the part but replace the entire device. I got my mini 6 replaced under warranty a few months ago, and I got a "white box" service replacement that didn't come with any accessories. But out of warranty, it would either be at a battery service price or at the "other damage" price. But they won't replace the digitizer/glass or even the entire front screen assembly and return it to the user. They'll provide that white box replacement in exchange for the damaged iPad and the fee.

If it gets repaired or parts are salvaged, it's for the next customer to get a service replacement.

There are some reports that Apple is doing battery replacements at central service facilities now for specific models and returning the iPad to the customer. But that apparently doesn't apply to doing any other kind of repair.

Be aware that in performing a hardware repair yourself, your iPad8 is now ineligible for either trade-in or further hardware support from Apple.

Trade-in requires the iPad to be electronically tested, during which non-OEM parts will be detected. The trade-in will be rejected. As far as trade-in via Apple is concerned, your iPad has zero value.

I would not recommend you yourself replacing the digitizer because it voids your warranty but it send you already have so the best thing I works recommend would be to try going to Apple Genius Bar but they may deny your service because you have opened up the iPads and changed one of the parts. If you find yourself in that predicament you can replace the digitizer but at this point you could sell that iPad 8 for parts and buy a good condition iPad 9 or even an iPad 10.

But again - Apple doesn't actually repair an iPad and give it back to the customer. They have a flat rate replacement cost (regardless of storage capacity of a particular model) for any reason why it needs to be replaced other than for an eligible battery service. With the battery service, the general idea is that the whole thing will be intact and might just need to be reconditioned to put it back in as a service replacement with a new battery, although I suspect they usually just put the logic board in a new case with a new front screen assembly. But the "other damage" price could be for anything up to a completely nonworking iPad that was accidentally dropped off a table to just cracked glass.

For an iPad 8th gen that's $249 (US) for "other damage" or $99 for the battery service. But again, that $249 can be for an iPad that just has dents in the case and works, where the glass has broken but it still sort of works, or where it just won't turn on. I know some people won't pay Apple's price because they consider whatever the problem to be minor and not worth the same price as if it were otherwise trashed.

Third party repair shops might do just a glass/digitizer repair, but I understand that many prefer to do a complete front screen assembly replacement because it's generally more reliable. I saw the result of a glass/digitizer only repair in an iPad Mini 2 and it looked pretty bad, although it worked. They tried to reuse the home button (a new front screen assembly would have its own button) and it was kind of off. A friend had it done overseas where it cost less than $20 US. But there were noticeable glue marks and stains between the glass and the display. I don't even think Apple makes money with this service as they put a lot of money into it.
