Transfering Old Apps To New iPad

Hi, I just bought an iPad ( 9th generation ) and I want to transfer my apps from my iPad 4th gen.

What I don't want is for the apps to automatically update to the latest versions because some of the software on my iMac is not compatible with the latest version of some of the ipad apps, is it possible to select which apps are transfered and is it possible to keep the current version of the apps on the 4th gen and use them on the 9th gen?

iPad, iOS 10

Apps cannot be directly transferred between devices.

When setting-up a new device using the available transfer processes, the transfer process creates a record of the Apps that are installed on the donor iPad - and it is this record of installed Apps that is transferred to the target device. For Apps that are compatible and still available for download from the App Store, the corresponding Apps are automatically downloaded and installed from the App Store.

The downloaded App(s) will always be the most recently released version compatible with the target device. Not all Apps will, necessarily, continue to be available. Apps may have been removed or retired from the App Store by the respective App Developer. Some Apps may have been abandoned - and may not be compatible with the new device. Where a compatible App is not available, you’ll not be able to transfer/install the App.

Available transfer methods are all-or-nothing. If you need to selectively move files, you must individually move/copy files using AirDrop, iCloud or iTunes (using a PC or Mac computer).

These support pages should get you started with setup of your new iPad - and the methods of transferring your data from old to new iPad:

Transfer data from your previous iOS device to your new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Use Quick Start to transfer data to a new iPhone, iPad or iPod touch – Apple Support

If the donor iPad, from which you are transferring your data precedes iOS12.4, QuickStart will not be available.

“Transfer” is rather a misnomer. In reality, your data and setup is merely cloned to the new device. Nothing is moved or removed from the original device.

An alternative is to restore either an iCloud or iTunes backup to the new device:

No. If you set it up from a backup, the apps are loaded from the App Store with the latest compatible version with that version of iPadOS. There's the possibility that older version of any app might not even be compatible with a later iPad.

On top of that, there's a decent chance that older version of apps that you have may not be available any more on the App Store.

Hello,

When transferring applications from one iPad to another, there are two ways to go about it. You may either transfer the data through a prior iCloud backup on your iPad 4th gen, or you can do an iPad to iPad data transfer. Through an iCloud backup, you can choose which applications you want to backup. Those application based backups are composed of stored third party information such as encrypted data that would not be retrievable otherwise. But, regardless, all of your applications will carry over from the time of the last backup. With an iPad to iPad data transfer, all of your information as an exact copy will carry over to the new device.

So, to answer your question, no, it is not possible to select which apps are transferred without choosing to set up the device as new and only carry over certain applications. As far as the app version, regardless of how you choose to transfer your data, it will prioritize and download the newest update of every application.

To learn more about transferring your data look at the following article: Use Quick Start to transfer data to a new iPhone or iPad - Apple Support . Hope this helps.

It doesn't necessarily do an exact copy, and it's highly unlikely with a five generation difference in hardware and the likely operating system differences. The most important thing that should transfer nearly as is would be the Camera Roll. I've gone through maybe 4 different iPads and my most recent one has the photos from my first iPad. Associated app data may have issues if there's a huge different in the latest version of the same app.
