Why are text alerts so much lower in volume than ringtones?

Why are text alerts so much lower in volumn than Ringtone? This has been the case on every iPhone I have used since 2012. I now have a 14 Pro Max, and can barely hear the text tones. But the Ringtones are plenty loud. When I check same tone for each, the text tone is much lower in volumn. Is this by design, or what?

Hi zoso4,

We see you have a question about the volume of your text alerts as compared to other alerts. We'd like to start by having you check a setting that could account for this.

Try tapping Settings > Face ID & Passcode and then look to see if the switch for "Attention Aware Features" is turned on or off. If it's on, try turning it off and then test it out to see if there's a difference. That feature lowers the volume of alerts when you're looking at your device, so it's good to verify and rule that out as a possible cause: Turn Attention Aware features on or off on your iPhone or iPad Pro - Apple Support

If that doesn't account for what's happening, let us know if this happens with all of the text alerts you test or with a specific one, and if this is happening with the built-in alerts or ones you've purchased.

Take care.

Understood zoso4,

That definitely can be related to Attention Aware, as it lowers volume when you're actively looking at and/or using your device, since it then recognizes it doesn't really need to get your attention since you're already present and aware. But, that also impacts ringtones as well.

So what we'd recommend is that you contact Apple Support. This way, they can work with you directly on some further testing.

Cheers!

Thanks! But it's not just on text messages. I go to Sounds and Haptics, and check the different alert tones. I can barely hear them. But when I test the Ringtones, they're really loud. Big difference in volume. All my iPhones have been that way since 2012. But it seems it just started this bad after setting an alarm in the clock app. The same text tones are loud when setting one for a wake up alarm. Strange.
