can't see grouped bookmarks

i'm getting organized with life's necessities in grouped bookmarks on my mac air running mojave.

i have like fifteen folders with one to five bookmarks each organized to accomplish specific tasks.

when i get to my iphone 14 running 16.3.1 i only see single bookmarks and maybe two of the fifteen folders.

its actually not even close to syncing to my phone. i just checked and i am logged into my icloud account on both devices. any ideas?

THANKS

Hi hotwheels22,

We have an article to share that goes over troubleshooting suggestions for when your bookmarks are not syncing properly in Safari. We'd also recommend updating your iOS software to the latest version, because iOS updates contain the latest fixes and security updates.

hi. i'm not sure i was clear.

i have updated the iOS per your link however.

the issue is that i see a folder called "Tabbed Safari Links" on my phone. there are fifteen individual bookmarks and two folders. both of the folders have no links in them.

this is not what is in the Tabbed Links i set up on my laptop. on my laptop rhere are about twenty folders and a total of about 70 total individual bookmarks. and rhere are between 1-5 individual bookmarks in each folder.

it seems like there is some kind of bug.

i am on 16.5 on the phone and mojave on the laptop.

anyone able to help?

hi shannon.

thanks very much. let me take this step by step be to be sure i am doing it correctly but also do i can learn.

i have exported bookmarks and passwords from safari which is very helpful to know i can backup external to the cloud.

  1. where do i go please to see bookmarks on the web browser? i don't see them in my icloud account?
  2. turning on and off safari (and any cloud based service from apple) i find rather hair raising because i have never understood the prompts. i feel like i the one hand i am at trial of losing my data (with no option for recovering it) while on the other i am at risk of duplicating it (and having to sept all this out). let me ask please. what is meant when the prompt asks to retain data on the device? and conversely what is meant when i turn it back on and it asks if i want to merge? i completely don't understand this.

Hi hotwheels22,

Thanks for the details.

There isn't a way to see your bookmarks on the iCloud website. If you need to restore data from an earlier version to recovery bookmarks that were accidentally deleted. This is explained in more detail here: Restore your Safari bookmarks and Reading List on iCloud.com - Apple Support

When you turn off data for iCloud, its information is no longer synced across devices and you'll see the option the Delete the synced data from your device. You will also have the option to keep the data on your iPhone. These options won't duplicate data.

When you turn on iCloud for an app or data, it will sync whatever is on your device to the data that is in iCloud. If you previously had the same data in iCloud then it would duplicate.

Take care.

hi shannon. all. thanks.

so i have verified i am logged into icloud on both devices. i have i selected icloud > safari selection on both devices. i have restarted both devices. i do in fact have constant internet on my phone and i have verified that i had internet access in the laptop. i will open the laptop at home and leave it on eirh internet access. but again since i was opening URL's and creating bookmarks on the laptop it is hard to imagine i didn't have internet access.

also to some extent this appears to be some kind of odd corruption issue since i do see two folders (empty) and i do see about fifteen individual bookmarks on the phone that are external to folder but within the Safari Group Tab hierarchy.

and since i didn't set up any grouped - well let me check - right, since the default for saving a bookmark on my phone is to favorites i can't see how i would have created anything shown in the phone actually while using the phone. it must be carried over in some kind of corrupted sync.
