Here’s is the automation I created that worked for me— the instructions are slightly different than what Sharkinstx posted.

Here’s how I managed to make automation work:

I am running iOS 17.2.1 on a 2020 iPhone SE…

  • Open “Shortcuts” app
  • Tap “Automation” in the center of the menu bar at the bottom of the screen (between “Shortcuts” and “Gallery”)
  • Tap “+” in upper right corner of screen
  • Under the header, “Personal Automation” you can type “Bluetooth” into the search bar at the top of the screen and select it OR scroll down to where Wi-Fi, Bluetooth,  and NFC are grouped… and tap “Bluetooth
  • Just below the header, “When”, to the right of “Device”, tap “Choose” to choose your vehicle’s stereo/bluetooth connection (assuming you’ve already setup your car’s BT connection)
  • Select your car’s BT connection from the collection under “My Devices”… make sure there’s a check mark next to it
  • Tap “Done” in upper-right corner
  • NOTE: the default on-screen setting at this point should be “Is Connected”… do not change that
  • Change setting at bottom of screen to  “Run Immediately
  • Tap “Next” at top right corner of screen
  • Under “Get Started” header, tap “New Blank Automation
  • Tap “Add Action
  • Under “categories” tap “Media
  • Categories under “Media” header are alphabetized; scroll down to “Playback” (go past “Music”) and tap “Play/Pause
  • On new screen, tap “Play/Pause” and change to “Pause
  • Tap “Done” at top right corner of screen

And you’re done!!

Worked for me!

(Phew)

And I do hope our valued Moderator allows me to say this, because I believe commiserating with others on this board has real value, especially since Apple has enlisted us to solve problems it created, but:

I share many’s opinion that this “feature” was intentionally programmed by Apple despite the fact it flies in the face of common User Interface behavior. It truly breeds ill-will between this customer (me) and Apple. We shouldn’t have to become programmers to defeat an obnoxious feature virtually no one has ever asked for. It’s the equivalent of your radio turning on every time you start your car. Or the CD player. Or the cassette player. And you CANNOT choose to stop it from happening. It makes me NOT want to use Apple Music— I hope it doesn’t break the board’s rules to say that.

This has been a problem ever since smart phones were able to connect by Bluetooth to cars and I agree it is very annoying. I don't know why there is not an auto-play setting on the phone to prevent this, but apparently there must be some technical reason why this is not done. It appears some car manufactures have an auto-play setting in their Bluetooth settings. With my current car I can set the stereo input to another source like Radio and the phone will not play through the car speakers when connected, although the music app still shows it is playing. I can then listen to the phone music, by switching to the Bluetooth input on the car stereo.

Anyways, here is a possible solution for you to try. You can create a Shortcut using the Shortcuts app that when connected to your Car by Bluetooth, it will stop the music playing from Apple Music.

  • Open Shortcuts app
  • Tap "Create Personal Automation"
  • Tap "Bluetooth"
  • Tap "Choose" under Device and select your car
  • Tap "Done"
  • Tap "Next"
  • Tap "Add Action"
  • Tap "Media"
  • Scroll down to the Playback section and tap "Play/Pause"
  • Tap "Play/Pause" on the top of this screen and choose "Pause"
  • Tap "Next"
  • Tap "Done"

That should do it. If it does not work it can be easily deleted by swiping left like normal. I just tried it on my car and it seemed to work. Don't know if it works with other cars. To resume listening to music from my phone in the car, I did have to tap play on the phone. It seems there is not a way to play/pause music using my car controls, only to go to the next or previous song.

Yea, shutting off Bluetooth defeats the whole purpose of hands-free use, so there must be some technical issue for this occurring. The phone manufactures, whether it is Android or Apple, claim it is the responsibility of the car stereo and the car manufacturers will blame the phones. I think the problem is that most cars do not have a control to play/pause music, only to skip forward or back, so phones play when connected. AirPods are able to play/pause music, so it is possible over Bluetooth, it just does not seem that the stereos have a button to do that.

If it’s any consolation to anyone here, I reached out recently to them in a very stern manner, mostly because the first level of tech support treats us like we’re ret@rded 5 year olds, but after a couple of calls I got the issue escalated to an American based tech with actual Apple experience that spent about an hour with me taking notes. She said that engineers were already aware of this and were working on a fix.

So to anyone here, I strongly suggest you reach out, ask to have the issue escalated to a senior tech and tell them the long version of your issue. It’s a thing at this point and only a matter of time before this gets fixed.

I unfortunately can't delete the Music app because I purchased a specific song I like to wake up to (I mean, I could delete it, but I wake up in a better mood if I wake up to this tune).

The good news is that the shortcut automation solution, if done right, DOES WORK! Just keep in mind that even tech support gave me the wrong instructions and I had to fiddle with it to get it to work. So don’t give up if your shortcut automation doesn’t work. Make it work!

Some cars (I rented a Dodge Challenger for example) have a setting that disables AutoPlay. My problem is when I talk on the phone (16 Honda Civic) I max the volume sometimes so can hear the other person well. If I forget to turn it down when I hang up, next time I get in the car I get last song played at 40. Yeah hurts bad. If I have a passenger it’s pretty embarrassing too

Hey everyone I figured it out : follow steps until you get to the car part - instead of hitting [My Car] you have to choose the network in your car. Mine said MB something.

> then when you get to the Bluetooth screen Unclick the active one and then click off or whatever it says (I just click the one on right but don’t remember name). Then follow rest of the directions

hope that helped -

Can you help delete the same function on an iphone 10? I would buy a newer iphone just to rid myself of this issue if I thought it would work.

It is not the car stereo manufacturer’s fault. We have cars from multiple manufacturers equipped with bluetooth in my household; my iphone 10 displays this incredibly irritating fault in all of them.

Thanks for fixing something apple clearly does not care about.

Aside from removing all music files from the 14 pro max, all of the online “fix” vids and even some tech support suggestions fail. There is nothing pertaining to ios 17.1.2. Kinda rediculous actually. Seems Apple is forceing users to listen to music. Personally, I don’t want music playing until I activate it. Muting the vehicles audio is a rather rediculous fix.
