Can I turn off all texting on my iphone?

I have an iphone and I would like to turn off all texting (SMS, iMessage, etc). I don't want to be able to send or receive texts, and I would like people trying to send me texts to see that the messsage was not delivered. I still want to use wifi/cellular data for some other things on my phone, but I am done texting. Is this possible?

Yes it is possible. As you know, there are three types of texting on your iPhone. SMS, iMessage and texting through 3rd party apps such as FaceBook Messenger and WhatsApp etc.

  • For SMS Messages, contact your carrier and have this feature removed from your account. There will be no SMS texting once SMS texting is blocked on your account by your carrier.
  • For iMessages, open Settings ➡️ Messages ➡️ iMessage, Set this switch to OFF. You can do the same with FaceTime.
  • Finally, if you use apps such as FaceBook, Instagram, WhatsApp etc. for messaging then you will have to either close out those accounts and/or delete those apps from your iPhone.

You can turn off iMessage, but you cannot turn off SMS messages. SMS is controlled by your carrier, and only they can turn it off, since it's part of the voice service. They may be able to disable the SMS portion of your service plan, but this is something you need to work out with them directly.

You can totally cancel your cellular phone service, and this would disable SMS messaging along with voice calls and cellular data access though.
