iPhone 7 Microphone not working after iOS 15.7.6 Update

My iPhone 7 (yes, I still have an iPhone 7) was working perfectly until immediately after I installed the 15.7.6 update. Since then, I can no longer pick up phone calls - the audio / speaker symbol is greyed out when I make calls or receive calls. The only way I can take a call is by using my AirPods. In addition, if I try to record a Voice Memo, nothing happens - I'm unable to record. After some online sleuthing I went ahead and reset all settings, and immediately afterwards the microphone functioned again, implying that the issue is software related, not hardware related. But the celebration ended quickly as the microphone stopped working again within a few hours....

Is anyone else facing this situation and is Apple taking a look at this? What can I do to solve the issue? Thank you in advance for your help!

Promising news: I just updated my iPhone 7 to iOS 15.8.2 and my microphone now works again, which means I can answer phone calls directly without having to scramble to put my AirPods on. I can also now use Voice Memos again. It took 10 months for a fix to arrive but I'm happy that it finally arrived.

Hi All - Did anyone manage to resolve this issue without paying a hefty sum to Apple 🍏 store?

I encountered exactly the same problem since end of last year but still no resolution despite following all the steps of Apple Customer Care Service centre who confirmed that nothing seems apparently wrong with the hardware after investigating into the diagnostic software collected.

iPhone 7 Plus Core Problem: Unable to make or pick up phone calls.

  • This happens even after I've updated to the latest and greatest 15.8.2 this week.
  • Phone automatically disconnects all types of calls - normal plain vanilla native phone call, FaceTime audio/video, WhatsApp, Messenger calls or even using any other phone app software

Another stark discovery is that the Mic doesn't work at all in all situations! i.e.

a) There is no sound recorded in videos even if you use both the front and back camera!

b) Nothing at all happens and nothing gets recorded if you press the red recording button of Voice Memos! Apples native "Voice Memo" app doesn't work due to this "Mic" issue after latest iOS upgrade!!

As a last resort, I also went ahead and did a complete factory reset. i.e. I reset all the settings - erased and deleted all data and apps but yet the "Mic" problem still persists and I'm still unable to still make or receive calls as the phone simply gets disconnected the moment it connects.

Clearly, it is evident that this is not a hardware issue and that Apple is very well aware that this microphone issue is a result of malfunctioning iOS recent updates.

Hi Apple - PLEASE FIX YOUR iOS PROBLEM and be accountable. Please don't unethically force your extremely loyal customers who have stuck with your brand thick and thin for so very long into forced product obsolescence. This isn't the way it should be!!

I'm hoping something can be done soonest to get this iPhone 7+ fixed soonest!

This was a perfectly working phone before and I'm certain nobody will want to incur any additional costs as its an inherent software issue and not a wear and tear hardware problem!!! :( 😞😭🥲☹️😢

Hi everyone,

The same thing happened to me last week. My iPhone 7 was working perfectly, but after updating to iOS 15.8.2, I couldn't make phone calls because the microphone was muted. Additionally, Siri stopped working, and the dictaphone was also non-functional, just like many others in this chat have experienced.

I visited the Apple Store in Paris on May 22, 2024, and they told me the same thing: the hardware was broken, and there was nothing they could do.

I am deeply frustrated by this situation. I've heard a lot about these updates causing issues with perfectly working iPhones, but experiencing it firsthand is another matter entirely.

Just for you to know, I watched a video about mic issues on iPhone 7, and it suggested resetting your network settings (Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings). I tried it, and it worked for a few calls, but then it became buggy again (people on the other side heard a robotic voice or nothing).

You take care of your phone for so long, trying not to break it, trying not to replace it even if you don't have access to some of the apps, because ecology is important to you, and it gets broken by Apple itself. Apple should be proud of people keeping their old iPhones, not harm them by shipping faulty software updates.

Let's wait, or switch to Android.

I had hoped that Apple would resolve the issue as part of the recent 15.7.7 update but alas, the problem continues to persist after the update. What's crazy to me is that this microphone bug occurs as a result of doing a normal update of your iPhone. If I had dropped my phone or caused water damage to the phone and it was my fault, that would be one thing. But here, we are talking about a problem triggered by software updates. To make matters worse, at the Apple Store I visited I was told that this specific issue is known to Apple (meaning it's happened to a fair number of customers) but for the moment, no solution is being offered to remedy the situation.

Hello, Apple? Are you out there?

My iPhone has the same problem after 15.7.6 update, first i was using my air pods for calls now they don't even work, previous month my camera stopped video recording due to this and ik its a software issue because every 2-3 time i hard reset my phone the mic and video recording works for 1-2 hours max, apple knows about this problem and is not doing anything about it, i even think apple is intentionally doing this so people upgrade their phones to the newer model

I have the same problem on IPhone 7plus mobile. Just got off the phone with Apple Support 5/11/23. I was Told they can not help me my phone is too old and will not pay to fix a software issue with microphone. This issue was caused by my installing their update 15.7.7 when I noticed no incoming calls connecting. I had been using my iPad 14 pro with no problem as I usually pick up calls on there. Apple support are not going to help… phone to old. How ridiculous is that? Microphone issue. You would think to continue using the iPhone I would be able to uninstall the software off. We update and expecting Apple to be trustworthy enough that we are doing the right thing. Was this a planned issue to make phone unworkable to then buy another mobile? With there in difference to the issue.. this is how Apple Support comes across to me. Not only that if I post iPhone to Apple store nearest 3 hrs away, will cost $588.95 to have a look and diagnose, if cannot fix some money back. We know the issue it’s utterly shameful of Apple. RIP IPHONE 7.. not happy 🥲

Thank you for the tip. I tried the reboot as per the above, I still

can't initiate What's app calls or receive calls. As for the normal phone function, the mic is greyed out.

I am also holding the 7+ iphone with iOS 15.8.

There is nothing wrong with my SIM as I swapped over to an Android Redmi and the phone calls were perfect, loud & clear.

It is the issue of iOS updates! Apple pls do something about the buggy iOS 15.8 and stop blaming old hardware issue or carrier issue. The issue is Apple iOS for phones.
