iPhone 7 Microphone not working after iOS 15.7.6 Update

My iPhone 7 (yes, I still have an iPhone 7) was working perfectly until immediately after I installed the 15.7.6 update. Since then, I can no longer pick up phone calls - the audio / speaker symbol is greyed out when I make calls or receive calls. The only way I can take a call is by using my AirPods. In addition, if I try to record a Voice Memo, nothing happens - I'm unable to record. After some online sleuthing I went ahead and reset all settings, and immediately afterwards the microphone functioned again, implying that the issue is software related, not hardware related. But the celebration ended quickly as the microphone stopped working again within a few hours....

Is anyone else facing this situation and is Apple taking a look at this? What can I do to solve the issue? Thank you in advance for your help!

Promising news: I just updated my iPhone 7 to iOS 15.8.2 and my microphone now works again, which means I can answer phone calls directly without having to scramble to put my AirPods on. I can also now use Voice Memos again. It took 10 months for a fix to arrive but I'm happy that it finally arrived.

I have the same problem.

My phone was great until immediately after I installed the 15.7.6 update. Since then, I can no longer pick up phone calls - the audio / speaker symbol is greyed out when I make calls or receive calls. The only way I can take a call is by using Bluetooth headphones.

Additionally, at times THE PHONE HAS BEEN GETTING VERY HOT. Hey Apple, is this DANGEROUS ? Will our iPhones overheat and cause afire, or possibly explode. NYC has been experiencing many battery related fires.

Not sure how but whatever Apple did to the software they surely broke our iPhone 7s , and have possibly made a very dangerous situation.

Issue: My iPhone 7 Plus was working perfectly until immediately after I installed the 15.7.6 update. Since then, I can no longer pick up phone calls - the audio / speaker symbol is greyed out when I make calls or receive calls. The only way I can take a call is by using my Apple Watch. In addition, if I try to record a Voice Memo, nothing happens - I'm unable to record.

Triage and seeking support from Apple:

I went ahead and I did factory reset and also reset all settings, problem did not resolve.

I called Apple customer service and they mentioned that it is hardware issue and suggested me to visit apple store.

I visited apple store, and they said it is hardware related issue and asking me to pay $349 to replace whole hardware unit since they cannot replace just microphone/speaker. Touch ID button sometimes does not work. They completely ignored this.

Questions that is still unanswered:

  1. If it is hardware related issue, then why did phone work before upgrading to new OS version?
  2. As a customer, I am not at fault OS version compatibility. What Apple can do resolve it?
  3. In the store, they mentioned that it is an issue with carrier. I swapped sim with another phone and confirmed that is not an issue with carrier.
  4. No satisfactory response was given by West County Manager in St Louis MO when I mentioned. this phone stopped working after OS update.
  5. Store updated OS to most recent version and problem is still not resolved.
  6. I am sorry to say that it is like forcing customer to buy new phone after introducing issues in older phone with OS update. This is an unethical behavior. Can someone please help?

I also am experiencing the same problems; speaker button grayed out, microphone unable to dictate notes. I can send and receive text messages. Cellular service is working fine. When I call someone or they call me, phone rings but can’t hear the caller and they can’t hear me. I updated iOS to 15.8 and same problem; no change. I have been a loyal Apple user, this is very disappointing because now it’s going to cost me $900 for a new phone.

I have the exact problem verbatim and I’ve checked everything mentioned above. The update changed the phones ability to work. It worked flawlessly before the update. So it’s the update that has done this because logically the steps show me that. What to do next as I’m not going to pay for service to a phone I didn’t break. Please guide me. I’ve spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on apple products.

After installing iOS 15.8.2 yesterday, my microphone worked again...but only for a few minutes. This happens every time I've installed a new update: the microphone initially works again, but then doesn't work. This is very frustrating. Apple: you really owe us an explanation. Why does the microphone work again (suggesting that the hardware is functional) and then stop working after each update? Why can't you get this fixed?

Not necessarily. 94% max capacity in an iPhone 7 implies the battery has been replaced. So was that done by Apple or other qualified technician using a genuine iPhone battery?

...I ask because the article linked below says: "Using nongenuine batteries might also result in unexpected behavior after installation, device software updates...":

And some additional food for thought: before rolling out an iOS update, Apple tests it out internally on the different models eligible for the update. In this case, Apple deliberately chose to send out updates to older iPhones, including the iPhone 7. Wouldn't you agree that once Apple makes that decision, they are responsable for not sending out software that will disable major functions (like the microphone) of those older iPhones, even if those phones are not under warranty?
