Airpod 3rd Generation “-Find My” connection issue

My 3rd generation airpods are labeled with the “-Find My” tag. This isn’t the issue though as my airpods don’t connect automatically when i place them in my ears. Going to bluetooth and clicking connect doesn’t work either as it will just say “Connection Unsuccessful Make sure "Ethan's AirPods - Find My" is turned on and in range.” And the solution i have right now is to forget device and reconnect them using the pair button on the case. But as soon as i take my airpods out we are back to the beginning. I was just wondering if I needed to try returning them or if there is a fix?
