AirTag is chirping when it’s with me

I have an AirTag attached to my AirPods, and maybe a couple months ago I noticed it had been chirping a short chirp of 4 or 5 tone sequence when it’s with me, I mostly notice it in the car.

the battery had been replaced not long ago and I don’t get any notifications about it on my phone.

The AirTag's chirping sound is typically associated with being separated from its owner, as part of the built-in anti-theft and tracking features. But in your case, it's puzzling as it seems to chirp while being close to you. Let's figure this out.

First, ensure that the AirTag is properly linked to your Apple ID. You can check this in the "Find My" app on your iPhone. If it's not properly linked, you might want to reset your AirTag and link it again. To reset, press down the battery cover and rotate counter-clockwise, remove the battery, then reinsert it while pressing down four times. You should hear a sound after each press and another when you've successfully reset.

Secondly, consider if there's any possibility that your AirTag could be sharing a connection with another device you own. If this is the case, that device may be out of range, causing the AirTag to chirp.

And just to rule out any other possibilities, please make sure your iOS is updated to the latest version, as it might be a software glitch that has been fixed in the newer updates.

Apple Support pointed me to this article:

How to reset your AirTag - Apple Support

I hadn't come across that hard reset process yet, I had only removed and re-added the device from my account, so here's hoping this works.

I did notice after the physical reset the battery was showing as low, so not sure if that is part of the issue or if the reset just takes some time to fully analyze the battery level.

Well, it just may be possible that this particular AirTag is faulty; however, it also may be the way that you use them being attached to your AirPods. Since both rely on Bluetooth, there may be a possibility that there could be interference between them ... but just guessing at this point.

You, of course, have the option to contact Apple Support directly to see if they can get this resolved for you. To do so, simply select the "Support" link on the lower left-hand side of this forum's web page. Good luck!

Check out the text below to see if this might apply. What to do if you get an alert that an AirTag, Find My network accessory, or set of AirPods is with you:

If you hear an AirTag emitting a sound
To alert people nearby, any AirTag separated for a period of time from its owner will emit a sound when it's moved. If you find an AirTag after hearing it make a sound, you can use any device that has NFC, such as an iPhone or Android phone, to see if its owner marked it as lost and if you can help return it. If you feel that this AirTag or Find My network accessory might be tracking people without their consent, you can get instructions on how to disable it.

I don't think that applies to my situation. I'm referring to my own AirTag, on my own device that chirps when I get in the car. I've heard it in the house as well, not sure if that is because there's another iPhone user in the house maybe and it's alerting detecting that other phone.

But in the car, it's just me and my devices and it chirps, so I'm not sure what is triggering the chirp when it's within 3 feet of my phone. If it were an airtag that wasn't mine, would I not then see a notification on my phone that it detected the unknown AirTag nearby?

Thanks for the steps. I’ve removed and re-added the tag just for good measure.

Im not sure what this refers to though:

”Secondly, consider if there's any possibility that your AirTag could be sharing a connection with another device you own. If this is the case, that device may be out of range, causing the AirTag to chirp.”

How would I determine this other device connection?

I suppose I’ll wait a couple days now to see if the reset fixes it. Over the last couple days, the chirping had gotten much more frequent so that was weird (and annoying).

Oh that is interesting. I do have another iPhone that I've logged in with my Apple ID I use as a camera via continuity, so needed to log in to the Apple ID with it. You know of a way to not include that device in the proximity? I generally keep that device off until I need it, but I'll try turning it on and seeing how that impacts. Thanks for that tidbit!

Interesting that it only appears to be affecting the AirTag on my AirPods, and not the one on my wallet. I most often have both together.

The resetting of the Apple ID associated to the AirTag had no impact, it still chirped many times today.

My point is that, although an AirTag can be only associated with one Apple ID, it may be possible that if you have multiple iPhones (that are also associated to that ID), if one of them is out-of-range of the AirTag, the chirping may occur. Obviously, this is not common, but possible.
