not getting cell data after leaving wifi area

When I leave an from an area where I have wifi, and go to an area that I need cell data, my phone frequently doesn't use cell data, unless I go to airplane mode for a few seconds or shut down and restart the phone. I have reset the networks, have the most current updates. Both my wife and I are having this issue and frequently miss texts until we pick up wifi again.

In the area where you have Wi-Fi do you also have cell data turned on, and do you have at least one bar of cellular signal? If the phone loses cell signal it will try periodically check for signal, starting with every few seconds, then going to longer gaps between tries, and as high as 5 minutes between tries. It does this because searching for a signal is very “expensive” in terms of energy use. Switching to airplane mode for a few seconds restarts the search.
