macbook pro won’t turn on no matter what I do

I have one of the touchbar macs where the ID/power button is connected to the touchbar. I’ve had it for almost 3 years now. it hasn’t done this to me before. when I opened it after work today, it booted up normally for literally less than a second and the screen went black. the touchbar was still on and working, but I couldn’t use the laptop, so I turned it off and kept trying to turn it on. the screen would turn on - just a dark blue colour, nothing was on it - and the ESC key would appear on the touchbar, but nothing else happened. I tried several times to reset the SMC and NVRAM and get it into recovery mode to no avail. I have tried absolutely everything that has been suggested as a solution, and nothing works. I can’t afford a replacement nor can I afford a repair. what do I do?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

Sounds like the built-in Display may have failed since it sounds like the laptop is booting. Try adjusting the brightness to make sure it is at its highest level.

Try closing the lid, then very slowly & gently open the lid just a little bit to see whether the display lights up. If it lights up, then slowly open the lid a bit more. If the display goes dark as you open it, then close the lid again and lift it to no more than about 45 degrees so you can "operate" the laptop so you can back it up before getting it repaired.

You can also try connecting an external display. If you get any video from the laptop on the external display, then it confirms you have a hardware issue with the built-in display.

Sometimes it can be tricky to get focus to the external display. You may need to attempt to log in blindly so that you can put the focus on the external display. If the login screen has macOS user accounts displayed, then type the first character of one of the user account names, then press the "Return" key. Type in the password and press the "Return" key to submit the password. If you cannot log in blindly or get focus to the external display, then you may need to put the laptop into ClamShell mode by connecting a wired USB keyboard & mouse, connect the charger & external display. Close the lid of the laptop which should trigger the external display. If the laptop is off, then press the power button & close the lid after hearing the startup chime.

Most likely this laptop will need to be repaired.
