Hi-I updated my 2020 M1 MBP to the latest Ventura operating system. Since then I cannot log into Messages-I get the “unknown error occurred”. This is just on this Mac, not on my iPhone 14 Pro. I haven’t tried on my iPad Air 3 to see if it’s an issue or not. Same issue with FaceTime.
Sure hope this is not an isolated issue and Apple rushes out an update that fixes this.

Hi-I am now on 13.4 and Messages was still not working BUT the good news is that I rebooted in Safe Mode and it’s now working again! All is good. Thank you, Mr. Helper.
markmelch-Try rebooting into Safe Mode. That’s what I think did it for me. Judy
I didn’t reinstall Ventura. I just booted into Safe Mode. I don’t think I did anything. Maybe booting into Safe Mode again will fix it for you? I’m not sure. I shut down my Mac and waited a few seconds before booting into Safe Mode. Maybe waiting while shut down made a difference??? If you have Apple Care I would call them if it doesn’t fix it for you. 🤞🏻
The instructions in the support link you provide seem to apply only to the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, not for a Mac. I'm having the same issue on my MacBook Air M1 with Ventura 13.4. I have not problem on my iPhone, nor iPad.
So what action did you take after booting in Safe Mode? I did that and chose to reinstall Ventura but I still have the issue.
