Usually the right RTF icon is caused by switching off the FInder's icon preview for that particular folder location. Press cmd+J and see if the following is selected:

Thank you for your quick reply and the visual. This did help, and I as I use TextEdit constantly, I wanted be sure I knew what I was doing and am able to control it! 😌
