Can anyone help please?
All my photos have disappeared from my mac but are in icloud but not downloading. I have attempted to download by ticking the box in the app but it has been 'checking library' for hours and nothing has happened.
What can I do?

The first thing I'd do is restart. If they are still on the web server, the problem is most likely your Mac. A restart can clear many common small errors.
If no joy, I suggest you create a new admin user, login using that new user and retest.
