How do I convert avi and m4v movies to QUicktime?

How do I convert avi and m4v movies to QUicktime? MBPro, early 2015, OS 12.6.6.

.m4v is a QuickTime format and a very close cousin to .mp4 with only some added DRM options. If some site insists on .mp4, you can usually just change the suffix to .mp4. .mov is somewhat different but decent apps should be able to handle it unless it uses an old video/audio codec.


Handbrake (or ffmpeg via the Terminal) should be able to convert old .avi movies to more modern .H264/H.264 wrapped as .mp4 unless they have VERY old and obsolete codecs.
